I think people are getting confused between matters of relative velocities and forces.

CHUG IS HERE FOR PHYSICS

Short version: two cars at 60 isn't same as one car + wall at 120 for crumple zone/energy reason listed above.

2 cars at 60 will be the same as a car and a wall at 60. F = ma. The acceleration will be 60 (whatever units of velocity ye use)/(time over which the car stops) for both cars. It's the same for the one car hitting a wall. Assuming everything comes to a stop upon impact the acceleration is the same in both cases.
By this argument 1 car + wall at 120 <=> 2 cars head on at 120. again, in both cases the cars go from 120 to 0 in the same amount of time, mass is constant therefore the forces are equal (and opposite).

In other news, I'm currently doing a research project for my final year of my physics degree. Today we managed to drop a sample inside an ultra high vaccuum chamber. I won't be getting that sample back until they open the chamber this weekend. Turns out the sample holder is broken but no-one told the chap who was measuring the sample for me. Funnily enough it was broken a while ago when they were trying to fix a different problem.

I think we all have been over this enough, but nice to see some actual content. What is the project about? Also where at?

I'm basically doing a whole load of spectroscopy on magnetite samples. The one we lost today was a bulk sample but I should be getting some thin-film's to work with duing the week.
I'm in Trinity college at the moment. The supervisor of the group I'm working with is actually part of this group.

Thin films are the biggest pain to work with- on my placement we were using 2 freestanding aluminium films of nanometre scale to screen out the low harmonics on our EUV laser, and we went through them at about one per week since any disturbance at all meant the tiniest flaw in the surface, which meant the tiniest hint of a focal point punched through it like tissue paper.

A final word on the car thing: two cars colliding aren't going to behave inelastically, which is how I'd model a car hitting a wall. The net momentum on two identical cars might be zero, but that's a lot of kinetic energy to disperse into each other and still stop dead. From my aging memories of my mechanics classes it's closer to wall at 60 than wall at 120, but I'd much rather take on the wall than the car if for some reason I had a choice.

I don't think I'll need to worry too much about that. I'm mostly doing reflection anisotropy spectroscopy. We're using a Xenon lamp and our spot size is about 6mm. Thankfully enough I don't need to do anything with lasers. They're a lot less forgiving than my RAS setup when it comes to alignment.

I don't think the wall and the car would be inelastic either, but in terms of the forces, all the elasticity will do is change the time over which the acceleration takes place. I still reckon the time to crumple will be the same in both cases. Dammit! Now I'm going to be thinking about this all night. Why did you have to crash Deadly? This is going to torture me, I won't get any sleep now.

The chamber my sample got dropped in goes down to about 10-11 mbar. What that is in torr I have no idea. I got it back today though. Yay!

Had a nice evening. We had the handicraft party and 7 from 8 women I invited actually showed up (very good). So we had a lot of fun and they were all impressed by the colors and other stuff so they bought things for ~350 €. YAY that means I could choose things for 75 € for free, YAY YAY.
So now I get a lot of new stuff to paint picures for the babys room and make bowls for the whole family for christmas.
I like.

Had a pretty sweet day today.
First of all, a bill I've been trying to sort out so my name was on it for the past like 6 months (im not even kidding) and could therefore pay it finally got sorted, and the guy who sorted it, even managed to take like a 1/4 of it off, so went for £1390 down to £1030, so dead happy with that.
Then at work I had my quarterly appraisal i.e. where they go through how I'm doing etc. Pretty much it was positive and just 20 minutes of my manager telling me how good I'm doing (something I didn't really think I was).
Today was the last day of the period (period = 4 weeks), and we get a mystery diner per period. Found out during that appraisal I'd served the md for this period just past, and got 100%, which as well as making the management love me for making them look good, gets me a £100 bonus Cheesy
Then I was basically told if I was interested, I can have a promotion to Team Leader (from Team Member) if I wanted it.

Pretty sweet day I'd say Cheesy
