Definitely worth doing some co-op vs AI battles to get a general feel for the flow of the game. The beginner bots can be sat down by one good player most of the time, so you won't get yelled at for making a few mistakes.

That's what I was doing and there did seem to be a better player who came to our lane a couple of times to help out. He also directed me where I needed to go at the start (I was glad I'd done the tutorials)
At the end in the lobby I told them thanks for helping out and that it was my first game ever and they were pretty aimable. However I know that most won't be as nice and I was probably lucky!
