Thankfully you can uninstall Internet Explorer 8 if you want to free up some disk space (along with all the other rubbish like Windows Media Player, DVD creator, etc.). Doesn't remove the rendering engine (sigh) but at least it takes the E away

Not sure bout Win7 but previously IE has been integral to Windows, and reoving via add remove programs has never uninstalled it in the traditional sense but as you say simply remove the shortcuts to it.

If you have removed IE as you say try opening windows explorer, and in the address bar type a web address... see if IE magically opens up

Removing the engie would break many applications, like Steam which uses the IE engine to render the shop and community tab. (And the news-popups)

Yep, I was just adding to it, I actually meant my last line to be a question not a statement...

No, it doesn't open... Even the "Internet Explorer Options" have all the parts related to the browser front end (eg: addons) removed, making it look pretty sparse! It saved a bit of space, although I think the media player, dvd creation and other bits and bobs I'd not use (or if I do I'll reinstall) save more space, which is good for an SSD.

Good how you can get it so there is no browser to open links. Confuses the hell out of windows (but only as much as say, not having Open Office to open ODT files).
