Okay, it would have been a miracle if that would have worked without a hick Sad

Trying to install Win7 I run into errors.
Setup boots, I select a partition and setup gives me an error after a while during expanding files.
I get either error 0x80070057 or 0xc0000005.
I know that the latter suggests hardware problems, but I strongly doubt that it's defective hardware (the HD was fine this morning). I guess it's more a problem with the partition table and/or MBR.

Right now I'm reinstalling XP, then I will copy Win7 to an USB stick to avoid potential problems with DVD-drives and then will probably try to clear that HD so I can fool around with diskpart (if necessary).

Any other pieces of advice or insights?

Strewth! That's not sounding like fun. The only thing I can think of is to strip out as much of the hardware as is sencibly possable. So effectivly just running the mother board, RAM, one hard drive, one optical drive, graphics card, keyboard, may be a mouse. If all installs ok, then just add other hardware one by one.

If all else fails. Reinstall Xp. Sell your copy of Win7 at a loss. Chalk it up to experiance.

Good luck fella.

lol...helpful as ever Cheesy

Did you try running the Win7 Upgrade Compatibility program before you installed? Have you tried formatting the partition manually before the installation? Possibly try a fixmbr (boot from win7, recovery console, then i think it might be fixmbr or fixboot?) Is it a clean hard-drive, or have you partitioned it?

My current problem is I wanted to shrink my vista partition to install win7 on another partition...but I can only shrink it by 3Gb - which is nowhere near enough for win7...i tried disabling my pagefile and defragging but that didn't help. Looks like I'm going to have to stump up for an SSD after all Cheesy

I found the Vista installer to be a bit picky about partitioning as well, seiing as they didn't (visibly) change to much, I would expect similar things to happen with 7. Try to install it on a clean slate hard drive, that should do the trick. (Or, alternatively, fiddle around with the p-table so you Win7 partition is the first primary one, and has the boot flag active. That's what I did last time.)

I wiped my 4 disk raid 10, gave 10% to a windows XP install then installed windows 7 64bit on the other 90%.

Got dual boot and no problems so far - didn't need a floppy to install the raid drivers - yippee!

Set it up downloading steam games before I went to work so should be on frag fest this evening once I've moved my config files in from backup.

Motherboard Asus P5B deluxe, 4Gb RAM, 7900GTO, Core2 6400

I guess this supports the idea of installing on a clean hard drive.

Definately hardware related in my thoughts...

Win7 (along with Vista) supports so much more hardware on install now than previously, it can pretty much only be a hardware fault.

The new installation procedure no longer 'installs' the OS in the traditional sense.  It actually just copies an image to your drive (which is why someone else complained of it having loads of un-needed drivers installed).

Do you have RAID set up or is it a bog standard basic disk?

Found out that my logitech mouse isn't supported by 7 (nor Vista I suspect) and defaults to a 2 button mouse.  Tonight there was about 0.5 second lag between pressing button 1 and my soon to be dead warrior pulling the trigger.  Hopefully a new mouse will sort it.   Anyone else had mouse performance issues on 7 64bit and TF2?

Hmm, difficult.
Was able to install Win7 with AHCI disabled and Memory Remapping switched of.
Win7 will not start with AHCI enabled, but I have not yet installed the Intel drivers.
Switching Memory Remapping on again makes Win7 boot to an empty screen. Of again it boots normally. Wonder if that indicates a defective DIMM. (I bought 4 2GB DIMMs just 3 weeks ago and due to XP 32bit only 2 of them were used).

That will require further testing Sad

Not sure what the Memory Remapping thing is you're referring to. My system is running as "AHCI" though - the RAID setting I'm always using to install defaults to this.

I've got Windows 7 working on mine, and am currently battling through RAID versus not doing RAID, since Zarf is insistent it should work (as is the internets it seems). I wish I could help, not seen any install errors yet funnily enough! (it's just AFTER the install Smiley ).

Okay, ruled out AHCI. Did a reinstall and it worked fine this time.
So it defintely looks like a problem with the RAM.

@Final: Memory Remapping is a setting in my BIOS to expand RAM above 3GB (I assume it's a legacy function to support systems not able to deal with more memory).

Guess I'll have to check the settings for my RAM and then have to either check or shuffle them to see which one's the culprit.
At least if it is indeed a defective DIMM I still have waranty ...

Are you installing the 32 or 64 bit edition? I think only 32bit OSes need remapping.

64bit.
But disabling Remapping shows in Win7 "Memory 8GB, 3.25GB used", which supports the concept.

So far I'm speculating.
Switching the DIMMs between banks should help me clarify that point.

Okay, third times the charm.
After attempting to check a few things regarding BIOS settings I managed to corrupt my Win7 registry.
So I loaded BIOS Setup Defaults, carefully adjusted my settings, reinstalled Win7 again (this time without problems) and so far it's looking good (fingers crossed). Memory's all there.

Now I have to get used to that bloody new interface and find out how to bend it to my will Cheesy
