My brother's computer is refusing to play any games. Everything else runs fine, but when he tries to run any game he gets BSOD with "Page fault in nonpaged area". A bit of research suggests that this is to do with faulty RAM, but it tested fine after a mem test with Ubuntu.

Specs:
Intel E5200 @ 2.5Ghz
Asus P5KPL-AM
Asus HD4850
2 x 1 OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz

Running on XP.

The mobo has an onboard gfx card, although with that games would load up the splash screen but then close themselves and disappear from task manager.

Any suggestions?

Try updating the video drivers and putting up the amount of Video Memory in BIOS.

that rig should be able to play anything... BSODs could mean the RAM is overheating though.. happens now and then, whats the cooling like?

When ram overheats (like most parts of your rig) it wall cause faults

I'd guess there's something with the videocard/video drivers/directx. Something in that area.

Updating drivers didn't change anything and I couldn't see anything in the BIOS to change the amount of memory.

The cooling is fine, everything else runs at pretty low temps so I don't think the RAM is overheating.

Hey.  I'm Officer Dibble's brother.  Switching sticks/single stick - tried all that.  Doesn't make a difference, unfortunately.

Also, I'd rather not re-install the OS, as it'd take a lot to do (lots of uni work + third year :/)

It means it's a last resort, and any other solution is preferable.  Officer Dibble will be online in a bit anyway, so maybe he can elaborate.

I like the way the last time I heard from Dibble he was saying "I'm just off to see my brother to fix his PC"... seems like not all went to plan Tongue

Pagefault in non-paged area was what I got when trying to install new RAM on my current PC a while ago. I found a BIOS update that fixed it completely, so you might try flashing the BIOS.

However my crash was at startup... seems odd that it would be whenever anything fullscreen runs... have you tried a proper memory test, like a 24 hour Prime95 test as opposed to Ubuntu's in-built chocolate teapot?

Hmmm, my cousin seemed to think that the Ubuntu test is fairly effective (he knows quite a bit about PCs - which is saying something in a PC gamer forum Tongue).  I tried a Prime something test that OD linked me to, but not for 24 hours. linky?

I tried my best!

I was going to flash the BIOS, but didn't fancy it in case it borked things, plus I was a bit limited for time what with all the travelling I had to do.

flashing the bios most likely wouldn't help.. it sounds either heat related or OS related.. if it passes memtest (is that a full run on 12 passes or just 1 pass?) and your still crashing when you load games, you may need a re-install or repair from OS disc? (boot from it and select repair instalation instead of new install/upgrade)

Right, I'm not a computer whizz, but here's my contribution:

Recently got a new rig from chaos, sexy as it is, getting the BSOD fairly often during gameplay (couple of times out of gameplay, but those have been separate issues) with the same issue of "Page fault in nonpaged area".

Came to the conclusion that it was a GPU issue with the card overheating (proved when we logged the heat getting into the 90's)

Since then, have sorted by having 2 profiles for gaming and normal use.

Gaming - high-ish GPU overclock but fans on 100%
Normal - low-ish GPU overclock with fans at approx 35%

I would recommend trying either underclocking your graphic card, or turning up the fan speed


As I say, my knowledge is limited, but may be of use Smiley
