to be fair though iv been getting sick of clan servers resently, and well claners, they are all pretty much douch bags, and silly sever rules are starting to get on my tits, to the point im starting this match making thing might acuttly be a good idea buecase people might acuttly start playing the game rather go on about there so uber skilled (false hope i no but the only people who talk like this are the ones with clan tags, sorry to say but its ture)


edit: btw i dont count WDG as a clan more of a communty as you dont do the whole uber comptive things and insteady just inforce some common sense rules on the server

If done right, the matchmaking might put you into games that are about your skill level, but usually all that happens is, you get a huge skill difference AND you are playing on a server that gives you ping of 200. L4D did it a bit better than, say, Quake Live, but I understand they both have dedicated servers running underneath it all.

For COD it sounds like it's all listen server which one of the players has to host (probably I'm wrong, they can't possibly be that stupid)? Or a server farm run by Infinity Ward, which just takes away control from pretty much everyone. Well that's just one issue and I hardly played any multiplayer COD4 - was mostly blown away by single player though.

I'd like to play it at some point, but I heavily disagree with most of the design decisions they announced lately and that Activision Senior Douche Officer Kotick sounds like a PC-based Hitler to me every time he opens his mouth. They are not seeing any money from me.

Unfortunately, CoD6 is currently in Steam top 10 bestsellers, so Kotick is actually right, PC gamers are all just too willing to go with any bullshit they get served. (It's not what he is saying, but it's what he is thinking).

Yeah to be fair on infinity ward all the stupid clan servers for MW I run into with inane rules like no Helis, no last stand, last stand but no martydom, neither, no grenade launchers. I can't keep up and when I did play MW I got kicked on MW a fair few times for not obeying their rules. Ultimately though I suppose that is infinity wards fault, while I hate such annoying changes to the core rules without the ability to enforce them through the game engine the temptation to ignore tham an enevitably get kicked and annoy the admins is high.

Well but itsn't it the same thing with WDG with the no spawncamping rule for example? Same thing, can't enforce it within the engine - spawns were actually made vulnerable by design if you compare with TFC. Some servers allow it, some don't. Never was a huge problem with TF2, when you join the server, you read the rules - or be kicked when you unknowingly break them.

The reason IW gave for removing dedicated servers is, that they want to make the game a better experience for casual players (i.e. the majority). But I don't see how that would work (and what it has to do with dedicated servers or modding in first place), unless every server gets some kind of a skill level and only allow certain players if they match the skill level. So imagine you join a server, with some friends, if it's even possible and play with them regularly, much like we play at WDG. Suddely you're becoming better faster than your friends - what now, do you have to play on a different server than them? And if not, there is your skill difference on a server again. Quake Live tried a similar thing and failed horribly in my opinion.

EDIT: on a lighter note: DICE are getting some smacking from the console players for doing pretty much the opposite with Battlefield:Bad Company 2 (NO SERIOUSLY DID YOU SEE THAT VIDEO???). Dedicated Server, clan support and going prone being the features NOT available for consoles. The rage is similar, the situation is the exact opposite.

Whilst I agree that you should obey the rules (and ignorance is no defence) I find that the COD4 admins have zero tolerance at all. There is no warning, just an immediate kick. I used the last stand without expecting it to be outlawed etc but I should have read the rules none the less.

If someone spawn camps on WDG we warn then kick / ban as appropriate.

I wouldn't usually expect a legitimate weapon to be outlawed but I suspect that most people know that camping is considered bad form. There is a difference tbh.

However, maybe the COD4 admins just get so many idiots that they're tired of issuing the same warning over and over.

As a side issue, I went on a COD4 server where you are 100% against everyone else. I spawned and got killed straight away (this happened loads).. yet when someone spawned in front of me (and I killed them) I was the one to get kicked. It seems silly to try and enforce an anti-camp rule on servers where you can spawn anywhere.... that is the only time I've been pissed off in COD4 multi player.

Not that much difference IMO. Rules are rules. As a server admin you could forbid jumping. Would be silly, but it's your server and you decide the game rules. What about servers who banned the Halo? Has no effect on the game whatsoever, but there are such servers around if you go and look. What about banning the sandman on some "highskill" clanservers? A legitimate weapon as well.

I mean, the whole argument is backwards. "There are people who pay for a server and want to run things their way with players behaving accordingly, but people are having a bad time with having to play somebody elses way, so we take away all control and make them play OUR way. That will fix it!". If you join a server, you have to play accordingly, just because the majority of server admins seems to be dicks doesn't mean the SERVER function is useless, it just means the community is pretty bad. I'd rather compare CoD4 community to CS community, as the games are pretty similar at the core. You probably remember the "No AWP, no camping, no backwards salto" servers from back then?

All I am saying is that some rules need more careful advertisement and policing

Believe me, I'm a fan of people reading and obeying the rules - and I agree that you follow the rule no matter how silly you think it is.

On COD4, I should have known better but maybe the server admins could have been more tolerant. We try to get the balance right here tbh... hard, but we try.

PS. I do still think that some behaviour is more "obviously" naughty than others - spawn camping versus using a specific weapon. Wink

One reason for admins kicking right away might be, that COD4 feels much more hectic to me. They probably don't have the time to really warn people about breaking rules (that are probably are broken billion times a day, as you said).

Whenever I was admin on a pub server I hated it with my guts. You just can't freaking play in peace, always some moron trying to pull your dick to see if he can get some attention.

EDIT: I don't mind spawncamping that much. Valve made spawns much more vulnerable compared to TFC on purpose. But it's a discussion that is sparkling here and there all the time and ends up in fights, cries, make up sex and so on. Let's not go there. Tongue

If they had matchmaking as default and dedicated servers as optional it'd be the best of both worlds.

Also note that Quake Live is the only real good comparison - competitive multiplayer, apart from it doesn't have Call of Duty's team based gameplay modes. This is kind of an issue. Left 4 Dead you did have random versus, but a lot of it was based around random co-op versus AI. CoD4 has real big issues if the game picks and chooses both your allies and enemies...

Oh well, we'll see what it's like on release. Bad Company thing - I read their FAQ, and it said "you must buy servers from our mates, it'll be "fairly priced" honest guv". Kinda sad.

Of course both games kill any offline LAN play ala Starcraft II as well bizarrely.

Oh, right, forgot about that. If you want to have a ranked server, you have to rent it from the officially certified hosters. That has been the case since BF2 though and has to do with ranking/unlocks, that, opposing to CoD are actually consistent and are stored on EAs servers somewhere. Great way for them to make additional money, I guess, though the servers surely aren't cheap either. I don't know anything about prices, never really looked into it, but I think it was reasonable with BF2, what's with 64 player capability and having to be quite faster than your standard CS servers at that time (where it's like 10 of them on one rig). It's still YOUR server and is completely customizable, though, so not completely the same thing - more like an anti-cheat measure.

Don't know about LAN, I always thought it was possible with BF2? Don't know about the following games.

Yeah, agree strongly. I thought these servers aided the developer by advertising the game and keeping it going for longer. People will find it harder to play together tbh.. and it must affect the competition scene surely (i.e. locked server for training? how?)

oh they claim you can make a locked lobby and take it into a server, but I mean you have to do that everytime you want to play together, massive pain. And they havn't mentioned if any latecomers can actually join you or if you have to return to the lobby, and imagine all the L4D style return to lobby votes when you keep getting rubbish pings.
