I got it a while back, thought it was a bit meh. It got hyped so much when it was on the 360 and it left me a bit disappointed. Some of the puzzles were pretty clever, but others were just the developer being a dick.

**Slight Spoilers**
Putting things in your game that become impossible to get after you reach a certain point, so that the player has to delete their save data is utter bullshit. As is making the player stand still for like an hour in-game in order to get something.
I also thought that the ending was pretty pretentious. The entirety of the 'story' is given in the epilogue and it feels like it was just stuck in at the last minute as an afterthought, but you still get the sense that the guy who made it thought it would be really profound.

**End of Spoilers**

Overall, I thought of it as a not-as-good version of Portal.

those things you mention dodgy arnt part of the main game. theyre the crack for crazy platform fans. you can choose to ignore them or if you really bum platforming try to get them.

As for the story i think he said its pretty much open to interpretation but I take it as being the random scribblings of a deranged time travelling stalker named Tim who also has amnesia so he can look surprised reading his own diaries and is the player. If anything they contributed more to my hatred of tim as an abusive shitbag obsessed with his own power and imagined love for the princess instead of actually doing something good with it.

While the story is nuts, the ending is great imho.

And I have no idea what you're talking about dodgy, but then I didn't do the speed thingies.

The only thing that made me really angry was that you need to use a  gameplay mechanic in world 2 to complete it that is never ever explained or even used a second time. What's up with that?

If anything they contributed more to my hatred of tim as an abusive shitbag obsessed with his own power and imagined love for the princess instead of actually doing something good with it.

Even if those parts of the game I mentioned had no impact on the ending and were just easter eggs, it would still be a dick move to implement them in the game in the way he did. He could have chosen to just make them hard to reach like he did some of the others, requiring top-notch platforming skills, but no, he chose to implement them in the most annoying way possible. He obviously thought some people would try to get all of them or else he wouldn't have put them in the game at all. It is that much better that he was only being a dick to the people who were the most dedicated to completing the game? Not much of a way of rewarding that dedication.

Imagine if you had gotten all of the you-know-whats except for the one that you had to get before a certain point (I got a couple of them myself and I know how hard they can be to reach). Then you found out that in order to get the last one, you had to start over from scratch. Wouldn't you be annoyed? The whole thing seems to me like bad/lazy game design.

About the story, to say that it is open to interpretation while having something as specific as a Kenneth Bainbridge quote in the epilogue seems like a contradiction. Either the princess was a metaphor for the Manhattan Project or she wasn't. If she wasn't, then why did he have the Bainbridge quote there in the first place. If she was, then why is it 'open to interpretation'? He obviously had something specific in mind when he included that quote, as it only makes sense in one context. That one line: "Now we are all sons of bitches" is pretty much all the 'story' there is, because the rest of it is entirely generic. If you took out the quote from the game then you could replace the words 'atomic bomb' with 'holy grail' or 'fountain of youth', etc. and the story would make the same amount of sense. That's why it feels stuck on at the last minute to me. Saying that it's 'open to interpretation' just stinks of Jonathan Blow trying to be trendy and post-modern, it comes off as pretentious.

FINISHED IT.

I'm playing it through again to find those hidden stars. I quite liked the ending (sort of) because it still kind of fit into what my interpretation of the ending was and the actual intended story. The soundtrack is amazing and I've grown to like the art style on Tim.

Pro tip on getting the bonus objects: find a guide telling you what happens when you get all of them and save yourself the insanity. Even if you find a guide telling you how to get them, you could probably complete the game again in the time it takes to get a certain one (actually, if you can manage the last speed run you can beat it twice). Emu is spot on- it's not creating a clever puzzle or 7 to get a bonus ending, since the majority aren't clever, just brutally pedantic.

As for the interpretation, I'd favour some sort of mental/family breakdown due to working on a certain Project. The hidden books back this up.

As I said before though platform players expect insanely hidden items with stupid methods of getting them. Its just whats expected in the genre for secrets, you can't really blame the designer for giving his core audience for gameplay, what they want. They want stupid stuff like that so they can get replay out of it searching for them. Stuff like warioland 4 has annoyingly hidden CDs etc etc
