AKA - Ripsaw

« on: August 26, 2009, 12:55:29 AM »

My loverly employers have aranged a hire car for me while the company car is being repaired. The man from leaseplan described it as a "work in progress". Which i have chosen to translate as "a big pile of poo that is going to take a while to fix". So this has given me a chance to play with the hire car for a lot longer than the usual day I get.

So it's a Citoren C5 estate. Apart from looking like the styling has been stolen out of the Audi offices it's a stanard car. Or so I thought. For a start there is the creepy way that the sentre of the stering wheel doesn't move. Then there is the odd way that is stiffens up the power stering the fast you go. I initaly thought that I'd broken it when I first found that one. Automatic lights and automatic windowscreen wippers take a little getting used to, but not wholy supprising. But then there's driving the thing in the dark. If you turn left, the fog light on the left comes on to light up the direction your turning in to. This was freeky. I kept looking to see where the invisable cars were coming from. Also there are two red LEDs in the roof, so that the cabin is bathed in a red glow. I thought I was in a submarien. any moment I was expecting to hear a sonar ping and be able to fire torpedos! Combine that with the "Dark" button, that turns off the all the interior dial lighting except for the speedo, and you end up with a realy odd driving experiance.

However the award for most stupid feature goes to the ability to set a speed restriction. The joker that delivered the car to the garage had set this to 18mph. Made getting out of the garage a tad chalenging. Afte employing the faith healing methord [laying on of hands on everything in the hope that something will work] I managed to set it to 100mph and then turn the thing off.

I'm shattered. It's only two days into the 7 days of 12 hours shifts, and already I've racked up 5 and a bit hours.

Anyway, befor I slope off and dream of llamas and ardvarks (please don't ask), anyone else finding modern cars a tad on the creepy & strange side?

All the pool cars at work are Toyota prius' They still freak me out.

Parkings worse with that little stick gear lever thing, your never sure which way your going when you press the aceelerator.

I am the current holder of the "who can get lowest Mpg out of a prius" compo at work though. 17mpg over a 60mile run.

Then there is the odd way that is stiffens up the power stering the fast you go.

Had a lot of fun reading this, obviously this is a kind of a car I can't afford to drive, but nice to hear what kind of stuff they are currently building in. The thing I quoted has a purpose though. The main idea behind it, is that with the current generation of power steering it is getting so easy to turn the car, that it would be a desaster if you had the same level of power steering on high speed and would turn the wheel 5° accidentially. Once you are moving you don't need that much of a power steer anyway, you'll notice it if you drive a car without power steering sometimes (are there any of those left where you are?) If you notice this working it's not a good implementation, though. It should always give you the feeling that you can turn the wheels the same amount aplying the same force at all times.

I get to drive a newer BMW at work sometimes and what creeps me out about it is the Start-Stop mechanism, which turns off the engine every time you make a full stop at a traffic light or something.

Ahhh nice to know Citroen are still making weird cars.  Have you found the air suspension controls yet? (Edit: not all of the C5s have air suspension)  My first car was a Citroen GS with this dashboard .

I thought I was immune to French weirdness until I drove the last "big bum" generation of Renaut Meganes, I love the styling, it's just the horrible controls, especially the handbrake and the strange start up sequence.

Oh nice one Guild 17mpg from a Pious, Epic.

Oh yeah, air suspension. I always thought the car was broken or something when I saw a parked Citroen before, then I saw one getting started and thought: well that's just high-tech Smiley

Air suspension is apparently much better at dealing with vibrations when driving, but are more expensive to use :/

I'm currently driving a Peugeot 207 and it's pretty good for a small class car and a huge improvement over the previous series. Sadly nothing weird to report about this one. Sad

I've got a 10 year old Citroen Xantia and that fucking air suspension is the bane of my life: seriously, it goes wrong so often I've stopped repairing it. Now whenever I drive anywhere I look like I'm in one of those gangsta cars with the bouncy front!

I've got a Citroen C4 with the same fixed steering wheel centre, automatic lights and automatic wipers. I find the speed limiter useful if you're going through roadworks on a motorway and they have a lower speed limit enforced with speed cameras.
