Hello you british persons.

I shall be visiting - or much rather driving through - your country sometime soon. Me and 4 of my university mates are going to be invading on the 14th of August.
We're staying in Grantown-on-Spey, to visit the greater area (and hopefully see some Demomen in their native Habitat, i.e. distilleries loaded with explosives).

We will be driving there on the 14/15th and back on 26/27th and probably be taking this route or may be this one.
So if you want to show us your favourite Pub and we happen to be passing near your location, feel free to invite us to make a small detour.

Aside from the announce there's obviously something more to this thread:
First: Any recommendations? Do's? Don'ts? Places to visit?
Second: I'd very much like an internet connection while there (to provide you with some pictures perhaps) and to keep up with the forums. So I need some sort of pre-paid 3G data plan. So far I'm thinking of buying an O2 pay-as-you-go sim w/ iPhone data package (costing me about £15) which would have the advantage of being able to re-activate my phone in the shop. (Right now hating Apple for the activation business! -.-) Your thoughts?

I'm in sheffield, but it's not really on your route.

The pay as you go would rape you for connecting to the internet (can be very expensive). You might be better off bringing a laptop (if you have one) and using wireless hotspots (a few pubs have them, and I'm pretty sure all McDonalds do now).

Do pop into some "old man pubs" and try some real British ale and appreciate the "culture" or something, lol.

If you're taking the second route (between coventry and northampton) you will be going very close to where I live. I can happily arrange a pub visit or if you need somewhere to stay I can put my tent up in my garden (my house is tiny - otherwise you could have space in the house)

Damn. We live near Bournemouth (well ish, an hour futher west) So not likely to see you, which is a shame. Damn thats a long drive m8. 

Just remember we have a rather different speed limit here, and don't expect to understand anyone in scotland. Dave has trouble. My dads a scot so i don't. Try Billy Connolley for some practice. LOL also insect repellent for some bits of scotland this time of the year, don't know what it will be like where you will be but some of the midges up there have very big teeth!!!!!

If your taking the second route you come right through my town (Birmingham).

I live in Coventry near the M6 on route2, avoid it unless you like traffic or you will be travelling at night. but if you go see deadly ill try and say hello.

That is going to be one long drive.  You can get away with 130kph and usually 145kph on UK dual carriageways/motorways as long as the conditions are good.  160kph+ will probably get you into trouble.  At this time of year beware the caravans.

When in Scotland you have to try a deep fried Mars bar and of course haggis.

I'm actually surprised you're going on tons of A-roads, they're not the best for long-distance travel.

Yeah, avoid the A roads at this time of year unless you really have to (see my comment about caravans).  What are you driving, anything interesting?

I was hoping for some sort of volume-limited option, like 500megs for £10 or so. But thanks for the McD wifi tip. (Hotspots there are not common in germany, so I forgot about that.)

I don't find him all too hard to understand, but some small bits in between are just to fast for me (still). But then again he's probably trying to be understandable.

That is going to be one long drive.  What are you driving, anything interesting?

We're taking it in two days, getting some sleep in between, so I hope it won't be too bad. Driving in one go seems pretty nuts.
Also, going to rent a VW Touran - not too interesting I'd say. (If that don't work out, it might end up being a Ford S-Max/Galaxy/ VW Sharan.)

We wanted to give Edinburgh a thorough visit anyway (it's one of our partner universities there, so some of us might end up there on foreign exchange). Of course we shall be having a drink.
