Poker and Gambling in general
«
on:
August 01, 2009, 06:38:53 PM »
Wasn't sure if this really fitted in with the 'Other games' section because it's not a video game, but it is a game, oh well it can always be moved, I'll just have to deflect the banhammer
So, anyone out there play poker? The game has interested and influenced me strongly and I am ever so slightly addicted. However, not being able to inject any money into the habit has probably saved me quite a bit of money! I'd like to think of myself as a skilled player but I've only really read one book and have never been successful online (thought I have done well in the home games we play). Actually, tallying up my results in those games I think I'm £15 down :O. But I can't stop playing, it's just such a rush.
Just wondering if we have any (other) gamblers on the server!
EDIT: Changed to encompass gambling, so post thoughts on all games/betting etc.

Poker...... yeah I have a lot of friends who are addicted to it.
I never really got into it, but sometimes I play with them and I drive them crazy with my noobish playstyle because I don't give a **** about the chance to get a another card I need 'on the river'? (always forget all these special names^^). But I think my result is better than yours - 25€ on real tables.
I don't play online poker because I would go bankrupt.
I was in a casino before but didn't play. Just sat at the bar and looked at losers/winners and drank with people like me which went there with their friends but didn't want to play.

@ Ringelbeatz: Haha, the problem with a playstyle like that Ringel is that they don't know wtf you're doing! Some of my friends really suck, but it's hard to play them because they play any two cards (assuming texas hold'em) and just do what they feel like and on the odd occasion you trap them with a big hand, they luck out and make the nuts on the river! (Yep, that's the right name). And that's pretty impressive making that much money if you're an 'amateur'!
@ Hzza: On Pkr.com they do 10cent giveaway sit and go's. Basically 10 players on a table with 1.5k chips in front of them. Game ends when one person has all the chips, 1st place nets you a whopping six cents and second a gigantic four cents. Now, I've done a couple of them, got into a cash game, made that twelve cents into a dollar and a half! But, I err lost it all after I got a little cocky and did some stupid things. So you don't need a big bank account to make it to the higher stakes, just a lot of concentration and patience. Unfortunately I am possibly the most impatient person in the world, and get bored horrifically easily.
Also, there are a lot of risks in casinos, not to mention the dodgy ways they get money out of you. (hourly fees to pay, rakes in the pot, no clocks, jackpot bells always ringing though no one winning, no windows and i've even heard that some casinos mess with the air in the building!) Strangely enough, even though everything seems to be against you, that small chance of winning is enough to keep people hooked. I myself still fester hopes of becoming a professional!
Sorry for the incredibly long post but I am very passionate about gambling and see it as one of the greatest 'sports' in the world.

Like Hzza I would play Penny poker with friends every now and again - doesn't happen that often anymore though.
Other than that, I've dabbled in a couple of things here and there. I used to do Accumulators for the weekend football, would sometimes head to the casino with my flatmates in Sheffield... sometimes won sometimes lost, but nevermind!

A buddy made it to win one and get out with 700€. That was impressive...

I used to play poker with friends a fair amount for a £5 buy in, but it took any fun out of the game. People were so cautious that it often went on for over 3 hours, at which point I'd snap and start raising the blinds wildly until either I went out or I won (generally the first option). One game started at 10pm and didn't finish until 7am the next day (I went to bed at 2am and woke up to find them still playing).
A better alternative is drinking poker, in which you bet fingers of your drink instead of money. If you win you drink nothing, if you lose you drink any amount that you bet before folding/losing the hand. Everyone wins

Similar situation to our games, Chug, although we played for a £10 buy in and strangely weren't too cautious at all. I always like to start the game with a MASSIVE bluff on my part (or pretend to bluff with a good draw or something) and always make out like I'm a crazy player, it really works well and stops people being so cautious, once you know a maniac is at the table everyone starts to loosen up.
Also, real tournaments go on for that long! Depending on how many at the table, we usually had 10 or two tables of 6/7, it's gonna take at least 2 hours. Of course we were not organised at all and just put the blinds up when we agreed. I think if you were to do everything properly it would go a lot faster.
IMO you can only play poker for money, because nothing wakes people up more. When money's involved everyone starts to think about what they're doing, whilst people who don't care generally disrupt the game and are products of not playing for money.
And Ringel has the right idea on casinos, tournaments are pretty safe, after all you can only lose your buy-in, unless you rebuy on several occasions you should leave with either a minimal loss or a nice profit.

I've played for money once, it was rather boring - the fact that over a few rounds one person amounted enough to just out-bet everyone anyway.
Basically, I do enjoy Texas Hold-em, it's nice and more strategic then most game types, and you play against everyone so no one has to "be the dealer" and sit out like some other games.
The main problem is that I've always played with a medium amount of people and a generally high-value amount of chips - meaning it takes a while to get done, like, an evening. We've solved this a little when we catchup with each other and play by upping blinds and betting more harshly (or at least I do), so when a few are out it gets finished pretty quick.
I've still not got a poker set though, not found one cheap anywhere - still got a ton of pennies though, which I intend to use this Thursday probably at a games night, and maybe next Tuesday down the pub for a quick game to teach some people the rules (yes, a flush is worth more then a straight! I keep getting those confused, so a handy picture guide is always useful)

Used to gamble alot through uni had spreadsheets and allsorts mainly on european football, could bet around £700 quid over a weekend and made a fair bit.
Once I got a full time job I didn't have the time to do it properly though, I then went to vegas and blew my entire bankroll (although most of that was missus on wheel of fortune), never built it back up or gambled seriously again. still stick the odd £20 on a match or F1 but just for laughs now.

That's amazing Guilt, to profit from betting imo is one of the hardest 'skills' out there. However, whenever I bet on an outcome like that I always feel uncertain and it's so easy to think, ah well it wasn't my fault I'll just try again. Poker puts you in the driving seat which is what I like about it the most. Sure, luck is a part of the game, but ultimately you are responsible for your losses and of course your winnings. It takes a lot of nerve to bet on horses, football and stuff like that and that's probably why I'll avoid that area of gambling like the plague!

I think its just discipline, when I was at uni and the money was tight i needed that money so i had to stick with it. Problem is then you can't bet for fun.
There is money to be made but only in working the bookies own systems against them with large margins of error.
I started by bonus hunting at casino sites and made a grand or so, that took me into sports betting, it helped that im a geek and knew all the maths.
I used sites like dectech.org, and compared thier data with the bookies odds in percentage terms via a spreadsheet. any thing over a 20% difference I checked myself (weakend teams, injuries etc), If I thought the bet was sound the same spreadsheet would work out a stake as percentage of bankroll using a modified Kellys staking system.
Made on average about 7% long term on total staked. with adds up pretty quick when your doing £700+ a week.
I'll see if i can find a old backup disk with the speadsheet on.
As far as poker goes I used to play alot, but I now don't get the time to play online without interruption.
I sometimes play at rileys or local casinos with mates, but there normally full of knobs who think they know it all.
