Cats love the house even when it is small (Because it is THEIR house ). And so the cat won't be lonely when you are at work: just take 2!! They will love you Gingercats?

Gingercats?
Don't get ginger cats. They'll eat all your lasagna and make cynical comments about you.

At some point in the future I'll want to move house. And preffeably to a house. Then I antisipate cats will be a factor. So will be a cat flap. Not sure how the fish will feel about cats. But I know there will be a no cat enviroment for the time being. Mainly because I don't want a litter tray in the house. I've house shared with people who have had litter tray using cats before. The sound of a cat pulling kitty litter over their poo in a plastic tray at night is not a nice sound. As for the smell? Pass thanks. Get house. Get cat flap. Get cats. Cat's roam free and poo and pee outside.
As for cat names? Well I do like the idear of normal names. So "Tommy" is a deffinate contender.

Well, you have to give the cat a littler box inside. A cat roaming outside will do some of its business there, but if the weather's bad (or the cat simply doesn't feel like strolling around) it still needs its box. Otherwise it will find other spots, which could be alot more unpleasent

Otherwise it will find other spots, which could be alot more unpleasent Exactly.. an ex-colleague once told me that his little cat always pees in the living room and he doesn't know how to stop it. So I asked if she maybe doesn't like the litter. He then told me he doesn't have a cat toilet because she can go outside. But I can understand that a cat doesn't like to pee or poop outside in the rain/snow with -5 degrees or something. So he bought a cat toilet and now everyone is happy. My family once had fishes and cats and the cats loved to sit in front of the aqarium, we called it cat TV. The fished couldn't be bothered, they lived their live.

The answer is simple:
Buy a dog. A big one.
Then train the dog to bite the cat's arse off when the cat goes into "crouch and poop" mode (inside the house).
Job done.

Apparently you have no idea of the hierachy of things when having cats and dogs

No joke, there's a pamphlet written by Charles Mingus (yes) on how to train your cat to use a human toilet.
