I agree with Millhawk and Vitalis. I always use the flare gun. It is undervalued. Many people argue that the shotgun is more valuable as they use it to finish off injured enemies. However, if you can aim with the flare gun, I find it does a better job of it.
Agree. People retreat more when on fire, flares have a long range and are very annoying to heavies (there I go sharing again!). Snipers must hate it too!

It's not so much the fire that makes them retreat, it's more the thought of having tampons shot at them

"Retreat" might not be the correct expression. Since the burning effect continues for a moment people are tempted to look for health. This might prompt them to leave a strategic spot for a moment and also distracts them.
A flare works really well on spots like the C-point on Gravel Pit where a pyro can erode a defenders health with a few repeated hits.

No-no, retreat would be the perfect word. Any act of withdrawal is a retreat.

Agreed, but as a heavy, any time I'm forced to give ground and stop firing then that's as good as a retreat for me

Depends if the G/F is happy Twig? Since I've got two kids I'd recommend a better approach to birth control mate

What I am saying is that children are THE finest method of birth control. Have one or two and you usually dont want anymore and you are too tired to perform the necessary act once again.. unless the milkman steps up
