Yup, I have the dreaded unsolvable TF2 won't start thing now and I can remember someone else had a similar problem but can't remember who it was, where they posted it or how it got sorted!
The problem is that whenever I launch TF2 I get the "Preparing to launch TF2" window pop up, then nothing happens, game doesn't load and I'm back looking at the "My Games" tab in Steam. I've googled that shit but everything that came up I've tried and hasn't worked (deleting/renaming clientregistry.blob, verifying game cache, updating every piece of software on the fucking computer) and now I'm starting to get scared I'll never be able to play with you bastards sexy, cool mother humpers again .

Obligatory question: Have you changed anything? New hardware, new software, new drivers?

I had this problem a few days ago when I connected an old CFT and wasn't able to start TF2 (strangely L4D did start), but I ran fine when I reattached my regular monitor.

Tried "Verify integrity of game cache"? I solved a similar problem with launching L4D with that option.

Delete the ClientRegistry.blob file in the steam folder.

You'll need to stop steam running to do this, then restart it (it will update too).

If other non-TF2 games work, but TF2 doesn't, then I'd recommend that you use the Steam tools as follows:

In the list of steam games, right click on TF2
choose "Properties"
In local files you can verify the integrity of the game cache
Delete the local game content and re-load if you nothing else works

I also keep a TF2 backup for a quicker restore

I had a similar problem and I solved it by reinstalling Steam and TF2.

@Tea, nope, nothings changed recently, it started after I left the fragfest and tried to get back on a couple of hours later.

@Abda, done it a couple of times, nothing.

@Junta, done the clientregistry.blob and verified game cache thing, deleted and reinstalled last night and haven't had a chance to check it out so hopefully that will work.

@Torgue, if nothing else works, I'll give it a bash!

Did you try ending hl2.exe in processes? Then retry loading TF2

It doesn't sound like that's the problem but it's worth a try I guess.

I just manually deleted everything (all the games and all associated files) from Steam as well as Steam itself and I'm now re-installing everything, starting with TF2. I'll update when its done.

Ok, just sorted it.

Basically it had something to do with the screen resi being out of whack, so I started it up in 800x600 (properties > set launch options > -w800 -h600) and changed the resi back to its normal setting and Roberts your mothers brother.

Thanks for all your helps and ideas, next time I will ignore you as it will be a trivial graphics setting that is fucking my shit up .
