DDR3 adds extra load to the psu.
so does 2 extra cores (and the 45nm ones add extra still)
and you have a 4850 which is a powerful card
how many hard drives do you have?
how many dvd drives?
how many usb devices? (that are powered from the computer, not a power cord)
all this adds up! and can make a 500/600 watt power supply crumble..
maybe a 700w upgrade is in order?
When I sent you that mobo it was mint! I had been using it and looked after it well (I loved it a lot!)
So if it is damaged, it was either shipping (which is a possibility due to RM being dicks) or you set it up wrong?
I doubt the latter though

2 HDD's - both SATA II. One is a 150Gb Raptor.
1x DVD drive
Razer Mouse/Keyboard those are the only 2 that draw power. I also have a PCI TV-Tuner in there as well though.
You're probably right that it is PSU upgrade time.

Well!
A couple of weeks later and my problem seems to be resolved...there are a few things I've done in that time but one of them seems to have worked.
1) Updated graphics card drivers
2) Removed my TV tuner from my pc (hardly use it anyway as I get no signal)
3) Moved my X-Fi into the bottom slot of the motherboard
4) Got 4Gb of shiny Crucial Ballistix Tracer RAM (looks veeeryyyy pretty, don't wanna put the side back on my case now
)
PC doesn't crash like it did before. The X-Fi sound problem seems to be much less frequent.
Problem 1 - Fix'd
Problem 2 - only just updated the drivers so not sure on this one yet - seems ok atm
Problem 3 - much less frequent
Problem 4 - definitely an ISP / phone line problem - not much I can do about that

Well here's my latest update to the X-Fi fiasco.
I was hoping that the issues were all just driver related so when I upgraded to Win 7 they would all go away. I was wrong. Still kept getting lots of crackling...and things like firing rockets in TF2 or borderlands caused a really loud crackling/popping noise and a lot of you have experienced the shocking sound quality through my microphone.
I've sent the bugger back to Scan for a replacement - it does however mean that I am without a soundcard until I get a replacement back. Hopefully their turnaround times are pretty good - I sent it via special delivery.

don't you have onboard? my sound crashes resurfaced after a short period of stability after updating the drivers. My XFI is the worst hardware/drivers i've had to deal with in my PCs 5(6?) year life, it is responsible for most of my PC grief the piece of crap

The sound on my motherboard is *sort of* onboard - you need a PCI-E card that goes into a particular slot to make it work to give you all the jacks for various things and I don't have it with me at uni.
Agreed on the X-Fi being the most annoying piece of hardware. For the £100 or so I paid for it I *really* would have at least expected it to work without crapping out all the time - I wouldn't even have minded if the sound quality wasn't so good then.

I've got 8GB ram and use a 64 bit OS
Never had any problem with my X-Fi despite apparently having the worst hardware/software combo for the reported issues.
Luck or Skill? You decide.

On topic, when i sent my PSU back to scan it took ages to get it back - replacement was authourised and in-stock within a couple of days, but took about two weeks on this step before it was actually dispatched for some reason.

I sent that 1up card with the 5.25" bay thing to scan for a RMA and they got a new one back within a couple of days..
guess it just varies from claim to claim but I think it helps to badger them daily

It'd help if I remembered to badger them - I need to RMA my new motherboard (which it is either that, or the RAM (tests fine) or CPU!). I'll try their site form again!

Yeah - unfortunately I forgot to check at the time if the soundcard was in stock when I sent it off - out of stock until the 16th apparently. Bad timing on my part. Hopefully I'll get the replacement soon after it's back in stock.

Well I'm at home at the moment so I'm picking up the onboard sound which will tide me over until I get a replacement.
As for going for the champ edition...I don't really want to spend an extra £40-£50 on a sound-card that quite frankly I've had nothing but trouble with. If the replacement from scan is no good (and I don't like doing this as it's not scan's fault) then I'll ask for a refund (or a different replacement) and possibly take a look at getting one of the asus cards instead - or possibly take a look at an auzentech prelude x-fi - heard good reviews on those but I don't know how expensive they are.

the auzentech cards are expensive but very good performers.. but the fatal1ty cards are the "newest gen" versions of the x-fi chip and have best performance out of the lot of them.. the ASUS cards will do well in a HTPC setup, not really good for gaming
