Spam, Egg, Sausage, Chips and Spam

WWW
« on: May 18, 2009, 10:26:33 PM »

Recently upgraded some parts in my computer and got a new motherboard, RAM, processor, sound card.

Soundcard is the Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional series.
Motherboard is the Asus Maximus Extreme x38.
Processor is: Q9550
RAM: 2Gb OCZ 1333Mhz  (ran memtest which was fine) (will be ordering replacement RAM soon)
Power Supply: Corsair 520W modular power supply
Running: Vista x64

However I am now having a few problems that I don't know what to do to solve.

Problem 1:
- Seemingly random crashes.
One time my pc had been on all afternoon with nothing open, and it crashed when I was playing bejeweled blitz on facebook. The second time after I restarted was doing the same again - however it has done it at other times too (but I can't remember exactly what I was doing at the time)
- What it does when it crashes:
Screen freezes
Mouse/Keyboard switch off (the lights go off & is unresponsive)
Sometimes the motherboard beeps constantly
Sometimes any sounds that were playing are looped over
My soundcard goes from dts/live 5.1 output to just 2 speakers (I can tell from my receiver)
Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing
Only way to get out of it is to hard reset
No bluescreen
No error in Vista when it reboots
No overclock failed error in bios

Problem 2:
- Graphics card driver crashing
- I am using dual monitors now and occasionally the driver has to be restarted, am using the latest drivers
- Runs at about 50C idle, so I don't think it's overheating

Problem 3:
- Random exceedingly loud crackling / pops from sound card
- Seems to happen when firing guns e.g. rocket/shotty in TF2.
- Sometimes when playing sound on the internet it can become very distorted
- Intermittent problem, sometimes it's fine, other times it nearly blows my ears out.
- Latest drivers as per the creative website
- Connected to an AV receiver via an optical cable

Problem 4:
Random timeouts/loss of connection on servers
- As I havn't tested my powerline adapters or router I'm not sure if it's them - but I can usually connect to the router when it goes down.

I'm not sure if any/some of the problems are linked to each other - but I am definitely finding them all very frustrating. I'm not sure if the problems are caused by hardware or software (but it was a fairly fresh install of vista), or maybe a power supply issue?

So my little technical minds - suggestions please?

Need any more information: Just ask.

Edit: Since posting that (it's now 22:53) I have had 2 crashes, first...the freeze screen which occured whilst trying to shut down killing floor because I had accidentally alt-tabbed. Then when my pc came back to life I was just browsing the internet and talking to someone on msn and then the graphics driver crashed.

Take out your x-fi, see how things go. Mine runs fine, but there are loads of complaints about x-fi drivers on vista.
If you are overclocking, is your PCI-E bus locked at 100mhz?

hmm
have you re-installed windows since you changed the mobo over?
You have had a lot of upgrades lately so maybe its a good time to try it out?

I once found that the C++ and .net services needed to be removed and reinstalled for some of my drivers to work propperly.. the Asus Dual gigabit lan needed it as it clashed with the ATI drivers..

Also, what power usage does that zalman fan controller report when you crash?
As you have recently added a Q9550 from a E6600 (which can tripple power usage) you might look into the PSU being the problem.. would explain most of your problems

Will try without my X-Fi tomorrow and see if I still get the crashing. but certainly problems 4 and 2 occurred before the x-fi arrived - can't remember if it did the random crashes or not.
Yes - the PCI-E clock is set to 100Mhz
Yes - I reinstalled windows after my new CPU arrived (which was after the mobo arriving)
The Zalman Fan Controller reports ~160W with the system fairly idle and it shows ~250W when I'm playing killing floor.

Chaos: how would I go about re/uninstalling the C++ & .net stuff? Programs & Features shows I have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x64) and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17

forget the .net for now, download the C++ Runtimes (both versions) from MS before you do though
and then re-install them..
that should be a good place to start

Also, undo any overclock you have and revert back to stock for now

i've got exactly the same problem. i started off with a sb audigy 2 live and that worked fine on tf2 but then i bought an xtreme music sound card from creative and didn't like it partly because of the problems you've described and now i've got an auzen x-fi prelude and it's still got the same crackly problems as before. i have a feeling it's something to do with the half life engine using an outdated sound codec (or something like that, it's to early in the morning to go find proper details out) and the newer cards not supporting it properly. you could try creative alchemy but i'm not sure it works on tf2 cause when i tried it it made the sound even worse. failing that, try a beta driver from creative?

Hardware issue I reckon - not software. BSODs can be related to drivers but I think you have another issue altogether here.

Junta is on the money Wink  If your mobo is beeping, you have hardware issues!!!  Only hardware issues will cause your mobo to beep.

The standard (some mobos may differ check with ur manufacturer) POST beeps are as follows:-

Steady, short beeps = Power supply may be bad
Long continuous beep tone = Memory failure
Steady, long beeps = Power supply bad
No beep = Power supply bad, system not plugged in, or power not turned on
No beep = If everything seems to be functioning correctly there may be a problem with the 'beeper' itself.
One long, two short beeps = Video card failure

As Chaos has said its proberbly your PSU not coping under load but fine during POST, but couls also be your RAM... Run memtest on it Wink

It only beeps when it crashes....and again - the mobo only beeps occasionally when it crashes. It is a long continuous beep when it does.
I have run memtest on the RAM before and it was fine - I doubt it's that but like I said before - I will be ordering some new memory soon anyway which will rule that out.

Nothing - just carries on displaying the time (which works). Even though the rest of the system is unresponsive and all the usb seems to drop out (lights go off on the mouse/keyboard)

I have run memtest on the RAM before and it was fine

How long did you run it? (At the Institute where I work Memtests often run over days before producing a random error.)

Also, I still wouldn't totally rule out the PSU hiccoughing, probably on the 3.3V or 5V lane as that powers USB / USB circuitry enabling controllers.

Just my 2 cents though.

I did only mention the POST beep codes BUT your mobo will ONLY beep once on a normal bootup.  If its beeping at any other time there is a hardware issue somewhere.

J could be right but PSU's can cause all sorts of wierd issues, so if RAM checks out I would go for PSU not coping under load, before changing mobo.
