I am having probs with my internet, i have a bt wirless router and belkin wirelss adapter, no probs for 18 months, after i got my pc working from scratch again i now have probs with the internet. One minute it will work ok, next it will just stop or go really slow, then might start working again. this does exactly the same with firefox.  I manage to get the following from the problems and solutions thingy on the pc i'm also downloading adaware to see if i have virus etc, i'll also run an avg scan but i did one after i got the pc going and it found nothing.

Can anyone help? oh, and i played tf2 for 3 or 4 hours the other day with no probs, but had the internet probs when i came out of the game.

Very hard to say, but is the following summary correct?

1) Your internet connection works, but is intermittently slow
2) The slow down can be seen when web browsing, playing online games and downloading files from the 'net
3) You're not getting any warning messages or blue and white error screens

If the above is correct then I'd ask the following

In relation to point 1): Is it the same time each day that this happens? Does a direct cable connection help (if it is possible to do this).

In relation to point 2): You've recently had Dell engineers doing work - did they install any new software or change the Windows update settings for downloading updates? Is there a chance that they did the same thing for any other software? Look for anything new on the start menu that might hint at this. Alternatively, you can review the list of running services via the control panel and see if any of those could be stopped if not needed (tricky job this one as hard to tell without consulting Google as to what each service does. Disabling a service could lead to much bigger problems). The indexing service grinds on Vista PC's and can be turned off (windows search / indexing service - this can definitely be googled to see what needs to be turned off). Look at the tray icons on the bottom right hand corner - too many also hints at lots of startup programs hogging resources etc.

So, would be good to know what Operating system you're using and what service pack too (I reckon you're on Vista 64 bit SP1).  Can you tell me if Dell did a re-install of everything or a tweak of your existing set-up?

One last suggestion is temperatures. When modern CPU's get hot they throttle down in speed automatically to reduce temperature quickly. This would be characterised by the PC working well for a while then dramatically slowing down afterwards as the processor is forced to step down to get cooler. You'd usually not see this straight away but if it happens immediately it could be a sign of heat problems in the PC. Get some temperature monitoring tools to report what temps your system has and we can look at those too. The temperatue suggestion seems to fit when you say "I played tf2 for 3 or 4 hours the other day with no probs, but had the internet probs when i came out of the game." - I could be wrong but your PC may have got toasty during game play.

OOO! I might know this one!

Loverly BT Hub probably set to "Automatic Channel selection". If your in the middle of a lot of wireless routers, and consedering that nearly every ISP is giving them away free with a box of cerial, then your BT box is probably trying to continually shunt you on to a less busy channel. This does effect the speed. Go with a hard wired connection like Junta said and see if this is better.

If it isn't then it's BT as your next port of call. Drop them an E-mail and tell them that your internet is poo. They will call you and want you to go to this site...

http://speedtester.bt.com/

BT opperate a 50 to 1 ratio. So if your in a heavy usage area, then your fighting every bugger for a bit of the boradband. BT will not admit any responsability. They will tell you that it is your equipment and not their's that is the problem. But majically your boradband speed will improove with out you doing anything to your kit. Conisidence? Me thnks not.

Good luck fella.

Sorry forgot to say (but you probably know how to do this anyway) to gain access to your BT Home HUB, open up a WEB browser window [or type it directly into your "RUN" command if your super clever] and put in the following address...

Wireless is notoriously unreliable. Try a wired connection, or if you're too far away I can recommend those powerline kits, that by the magical power of signal processing and some clever physics allows your network connection to be sent through your electricity! :O

That it does. Sad

Actually, to be specific, now I have a powerline adaptor, going into a 9m extension cable, into a power socket in the kitchen, then through the wires up to my Dad's office, and through the second powerline adaptor into the router. The extension cable bit is to avoid the fuse box, as my computer's in the extension. It's not a great way of doing things. Undecided

Yeah, they do specifically recommend that you don't use powerline adapters with extension leads...

I've had a much more stable connection since I've been using powerline instead of wireless, with lower pings too!

Well, yeah, I still get an awful connection. But it was actually worse without the extension lead, we think the fusebox was throttling it somehow.

I had the same problem with a lead directly from pc to bthomehub. My ping in tf2 seems good all the time, i don't seem to get any slow down during game play. And the internet played up again last night even before i started playing any games (so maybe not temp issue?), which is why i wasn't on last night. I did a scan using adaware and found no threats, took effing ages as i still have my windows old folder on the pc!!

I'm on vista 32 sp1. I did the restore to my pc rather than dell, all the engineer did was put the graphics cards in, and he only put 1 in the first day and i installed the drivers for it and had the same probs as now before he came back the next day with the 2nd card.

I have hardly installed anything on the pc since restarting, just zone alarm, avg, windows/vista updates, belkin software, adawrae, tiger woods, EAdownloader  Most downloads of these stuff have been really slow adaware was downloading last night at between 15 and 25, whereas when i downloaded tiger woods again i was downloading at 822.

belkin software
theres your problem!
get rid of the belkin component in your pc!
if its a router you should be ok.. but if its a usb adaptor then your doomed to encouter problems!
I dont think I have met someone who hasnt had problems with a belkin wifi card :S

Also try messing about with the ports on the homehub.. that can help as Im using one.. I hate it but it was free

I have never had any problems with Belkin, partly because I dunno what it is and partly because I've never owned one.

i've got a belkin wireless usb adapter, again no problems for 18 months.

I have only had this prob since i reset my pc.

I have just had zone alarm pop up with a security alert in orange saying ip 192.168.1.253 (netbios session) the firewall has blocked internet access to it, i think this might have something to do with my homehub?? does anyone know?

Aha! Zone Alarm has its fair share of issues too! Try temporarily disabling it - should be fine since most routers also have a firewall built in Wink
