Can you guys help...(bear in mind i've only been playing the game since Jan this year, and i'm not a pc nut)

I here people talking about 'binds', what do poeple have bound and how do you do them?

Sprays; is there a special format if so what is it?

Getting into the game, again I have heard of different short cuts which make it quicker (miss out vid), can someone explain how to do it?

Are there any settings which might improve fps or anything else like that, if it even makes any difference, if so how do you even see what you are getting? I know when I played COD4 there were some standard things that we changed, but i had help doing them Embarrassed

Are there any other graphics settings i need to change from the default?

Anything else that I should know about that is not part of the normal set up?

While i like playing medic it is nice to kill a few people as well, and it helps to keep my kpd so high :Smiley and I do talk during the game but I keep forgetting its on push to talk  :Smiley

And lastly, i have noticed a few times now that i break my highest kills or points etc but they don't always go in my best moments bit. This has happened even when I have got an acievement e.g., I have got the 10k healing in one life achievement but my best moment is 9k, and I know i definitely did it as I had the pop up showing 10k something. Does anyone know why it doesn't always update?

About Binds: I only have a bind that says "Spawned" in the teamchat, when I press f1. But I only use it in clanwars cuz its important for your team to know that their medic just respawned.

In my case I guess it was: bind f1 say_team "Spawned" ?!?

Sprays: To use sprays in tf2 you have to convert them to .vtf (well not really, but if you want to use transparent sprays, its the best deal) The easiest way to do this is to download "Paint.NET", an opensource paint programm. The reason you should use this is that there is an addon for Paint.NET that has been programmed to convert images in the perfect format for valves sourcegames. Oh and dont forget to put them into "Steam/steamapps/YOURACCNAME/Team Fortress 2/tf/materials/vgui/logos" because sometimes tf2 wont load them when they arent in this folder.

About settings: I prefer setting shadows to high, simply because there are so many situations where you can see an enemy shadow before he comes around the corner, thats a big advantage, trust me.

The Stats question: That often happens if you ALT-F4 out of the game instead of disconnecting the server first. Or when the steam servers are currently down (that happened quiet a lot recently)

Sprays I save as... .tga in paint.net, I think they have to be 24bit.

I sympathise wid yos on the push to talk shenanigans though, I wish you could set it to open mic like in Teamspeak.

I use '-novid -noborder -windowed' as launch options, which plays in a full screen window (so alt-tab works better). Stats is usually steam servers going down as abda says, happens far too often.

TF2 inherited a simple, yet useful script-language from it's predecessor, Quake.
TF2Wiki

In a nutshell: You can create config-files which can be executed. That can be done automatically in a few cases, by hand in the console and each config can call another config.
A config (simple textfile saved with extension .cfg) can change settings, bind/rebind keys and define "alias" (kind of macros).

If you want to see some examples open the config.cfg in your "\Steam\SteamApps\<your_account>\team fortress 2\tf\cfg"-folder where TF2 stores all settings.

Scripts are useful to automate settings, like different key binds for different classes, or building/destroying buildings without using the inbuild menu.
You can do some advanced scriptings where you can automate certain movement pattern. Mind that some of those can be controversial.

Dang, apparently we lost Egg's script pack, which covered a lot of ground.

A good starting point is to create a config called "autoexec.cfg", which will be loaded automatically when the game starts. Add a line there "setinfo ec 1" (without quotes) which will load class configs automatically (if present). You can store your settings in the autoexec.
Then, if you like, you can create class configs (e.g. "scout.cfg") and store settings and binds there which will load once you select scout in the game (but note that the settings remain active until you undo/overwrite them, even if you change class ... e.g. if you have "bind F dropitem" in scout.cfg that key will be bound to that command until it is changed manually or by another config)

One more complex example (from my engineer.cfg):

For sprays, yep, VTF is needed, though you also need a correct VMT file to go along with it. The VMT file is a small text file which instructs the game how to display the texture. Personally I edit in Photoshop, save as a (non-interlaced) PNG, then convert using VTFEdit. Obviously PS is quite intimidating, took me a few years to be properly competent, any image editing program will suffice! VTFEdit also lets you generate VMT files for a given VTF, but they're not always perfect formatting, so I'll provide a template in a moment Wink. abda provided the correct folder in which both need to be placed.

I'd simply recomend you go to FPSB and visit the tutorials section and have a look at installing sprays, then look in the sprays section and pick one out (or make your own, I wrote a tutorial on that). Then look in the scripts section, and find something that suits you. (the only one I have is auto-redisguise).

For key binding, here's a list of the keys that you can bind a command or script to, as well as the keys' offical names that you have to type into the console or the config file.

If you have a mouse with more than 3 buttons, then a good bind to have is bind mouse4 +voicerecord. This will set the extra mouse button to transmit voice chat, which I find much easier than using the 'v' key.

Another useful bind is bind mouse3 slot3, which will make the mouse scroll wheel (clicking it, not scrolling up or down) switch to your melee weapon.

If you want to bind keys to voice commands then this is a simple tutorial on how to do it.

I use bind f “voicemenu 0 1″ and bind q “voicemenu 1 1″. These set the 'f' key to say 'Thanks' and the 'q' key to shout 'Spy!' respectively.
