My aural issues seem to be getting worse with channel drop out, crackles, pops and excessive moaning (that last might not be the soundcard!). So, I think my good old X-Fi might be on its last legs. Thought I might try a change - not really impressed with Creative's driver support.

Anyone tried one of these?

If you must spend your money on a new one, the new CL X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty is the way forward

Its got the new generation of X-Fi chip, and its PCIe without a bridge so its native! which means youll get better bandwidth to a major part of your system!
Im currently using 2 of them, 1 for my main rig and one for my secondary one.. They sound awsome in 5.1/7.1 (tested with a £3K AV rig and a few pairs of 5.1 headphones)
There are 2 versions (the only difference is an I/O 5.25" bay)

Get yourself one of these..
If you watch loads of movies and listen to loads of music you could also look at a Asus Xonar although theyr not as good at gaming theyr brilliant at media (beats the creative cards by miles!)

I use the onboard sound of my Asus P5W DH deluxe motherboard, connected via optical to a panasonic home cinema system (SA-HT05 if anyone cares)

One of the suggestions is "Terratec and M-Audio both make quality sound cards, and I much, much prefer those companies to Creative.". I'll be on the lookout (with reviews) of other alternatives - my current card is X-Fi, but I dread to install the vista drivers when I need to in the future, or get it working in Linux.

Anycase, just one voice of dissent against Creative.

M-Audio DONT make a good sound card.. they make really bad budget production cards
and theyr bollocks! I know cuz I had one in a music rec rig and it killed the performance of it!
sadly atm X-Fi or Xonar are the only ways to go for gaming which sucks cuz the X-Fi chip is better but the Xonar drivers are pwn

How odd, I've never experianced any problems with Creative. I've been using the x-Fi gamer card from well over 2 years now without fault. Even got a set of Creative 2.1 speakers for the PC and a standard pair for the MAC. Great sound reporduction, well at least to my ears (which aren't that good to be honest).

I suppose you could use the on-board sound card, but I would be very supprised if it turned out awsome. Good luck Gasman.

I had an SB Live and had driver problems. I had an Audigy and had driver problems, and proving that I never learn, I read about the new Audigy 2 which would solve my driver problems. It had driver problems. Never going to buy Creative again.

Besides, does Vista have hw sound acceleration yet?

It does have hw sound acceleration, but it uses the CPU which I hate it doing... plus it sounds nicer..
I havnt had any driver problems with my titanium PCIe

Had 3 creative soundcards. Currently on my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer. Never had driver problems, but I am using XP Pro rather then Vista.

I had 2 SB Lives, biggest piles of crap ever, now running a Creative XFX on Windows XP courtesy of Junta, no probs at all

Um, Hardware acceleration is the opposite of using the CPU. According to that /. discussion, it actually doesn't have it so creative had to fake it in the drivers to make it work, so vista itself doesn't do any hardware acceleration. Not that the one game designer categorically stated they mainly have to do software sound anyway for 97% of cases, heh.

The only reason I wasn't using onboard is a buzz it had from some known idiotic problem with the motherboard.
