Once you get to 1/1015, the probability of an event ever happening is negligible.  If you get to 1/1050, the event could not have happened even once in 15 billion-years. After studying the complexity of a protein molecule, Dr. Morowitz concluded that the probability of life occurring by chance is 1/10236. 1/10236 takes into account all the atoms in the universe, and the chance that the right ones came together just once to form a protein molecule.

Dr. Hugh Ross, Ph.D., sat down and carefully performed an extraordinarily complex mathematical computation. He took 123 separate parameters (factors) and calculated the odds that all 123 factors, which had to be present for the earth to exist as we know it, could have come together—“just happened”—on their own.

Some of his parameters need to be listed here to begin to appreciate the complexity of his calculations.
He computed an exact value for:
galaxy size, type, location,
birth date of the sun,
proximity of solar nebula to a supernova eruption,
number of moons,
mass and distance from moons,
tidal force,
axis tilt of planet,
planetary distance from star,
global distribution of continents,
thickness of planet crust,
atmospheric transparency, pressure, viscosity, carbon dioxide level,
amount of chlorine, cobalt, copper, fluorine, nickel, potassium (and many other elements in the earth’s crust),
oxygen-to-nitrogen ratio,
volcanic activity and scores more.

Then Dr. Ross performed one final mathematical computation before arriving at a final conclusion on the chances of the entire universe producing even one earth.

The results of his calculation — of finding all 123 of his parameters on a single earth are: “less than one chance in 10 to the 139th power (ten thousand trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion) exists that even one such planet would occur anywhere in the universe.”

Just a couple of examples...

I don't see the point in computing the probability of our earth forming, our earth is favourable to the life that evolved here, its not the only place life could live on. and theres 300 x 10^21 stars in the known universe anyway, let alone planets. And the fact that we are here to observe how well suited to the planet life here is doesn't say much at all.

The formation of proteins is the biggest problem. But that line about could not have happened once in 15 billion years is nonsense. The universe could have gotten lucky, the event will happen eventually on a long enough time scale, and while its less likely to happen sooner rather than later its not impossible.

Maybe life as we know it is that rare yet, but I think it's fair to say that

a) things evolve in the sense that what was true yesterday isn't true today.... gravity on earth, raidation coming through ozone, % of oxygen in air... so life didn't work yesterday, ok... today is another day

b) we have no way conceived all ways life CAN exist... they only just found that arsenic based crap the other day, I mean come on... intelligent people have said for years (I only know of me, but I know there are others)... well that that we knew the earth was the centre of the universe..... until we found otherwise.   We knew the atom was indivisible... until we found otherwise etc etc etc.... there is more life out there, it probably will be based on different chemical elements, and yes it's prob beyond your imagination [1]



[1] - though I also though about that.... I predict that although the new life form will look different to us, it wont look any more different to me than a whale, or an ant, or an eagle, or a millipede... it will have legs, it will be symmetrical, more than likely favour vision or sound for input, eat, shit and fuck.

Anyway... got sent this joke and since I'm a consultant, it made me laugh (maybe TOO close to the truth! )

A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of the dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Broni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the shepherd... "If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?" The shepherd looked at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looked at his peacefully grazing flock and calmly answered "sure".

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his IBM ThinkPad and connected it to a cell phone, then he surfed to a NASA page on the internet where he called up a GPS satellite navigation system, scanned the area, and then opened up a database and an Excel spreadsheet with complex formulas. He sent an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he prints out a 130-page report on his miniaturized printer then turns to the shepherd and says, "You have exactly 1586 sheep. "That is correct; take one of the sheep." said the shepherd. He watches the young man select one of the animals and bundle it into his car.

Then the shepherd says: "If I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my animal?", "OK, why not." answered the young man. "Clearly, you are a consultant." said the shepherd. "That's correct." says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?" "No guessing required." answers the shepherd. "You turned up here although nobody called you. You want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you don't know crap about my business...... Now give me back my dog."
