yeah, this is pretty much for Chaos, but tag along if you want to pretend you're cool.


I'm going to be getting Vista, so I'll need more RAM. I have 2x1Gb, can I add another Gb by using 2X512 in the remaining 2 slots?

lol nope.. cant do that.. all ram sticks must be matched pairs... meaning you can have 4 sticks in there. but 2 pairs of ddrX of the same brand/speed/model and each pair must be placed together..
2GB is cool for vista.. depending on your CPU.. as long as you have anything over 2.6 dualcore your good to go with 2gb of ram...
what speed is it? do you know?

Vista seems to not like differnet speed ram for reasons i cant fathom.. it crashes a lot... i tested it... xp was fine, vista was a bitch.. but that was waaaaay before sp1 so sit may have changed Smiley was annoying cuz its quite clearly a problem for the mobo/cmos to sort out, not the os :X

Ugh RAM is a complete nightmare to mix and match, ive tried before and its drove me nuts.

Like has been said you need to make sure they are all running at the same speed which shouldnt be a problem if you set the memory speed (and FSB divider/ratio) manually in the BIOS. Then i'd check that both sets of modules are rated to run at the same voltage as some 'entusiast' level RAM needs to be over volted by default and where as most bog standard stuff is rated to only run at standard voltages.

At the end of the day, when RAM prices are so low its probably easier to buy a new set but play about by all means.

Post back with any results, i'd be quite interested to hear how it goes given that i had such a bad experience.
