I know most of the regulars already have a pretty good idea, but sometimes I uber people and get the feeling they're thinking 'oh no!!...help?!? what do I do?!?'. Getting an uber should be fun, and is often a chance to do something game changing - so I thought I'd put a quick guide together for newer players:

This is about regular uber, not kritz btw:

Attacking:

 * Push forward. Take the shortest possible route to the enemy - don't turn back, don't run around people, and if you went the wrong way never change your mind. Every second is vital! This is the most important tip I can give ; it's the difference between brilliant ubers and bad ones. If you push forward and don't waste it sight-seeing, you're bound to get another one later.

 * Targets: Always sentries first ; most good medics will take the sg knockback for you, so just run directly towards it. If you're a pyro, it's often good to circle it a bit to hurt the engie/dispenser too.  If you've done that, next targets are usually medics and demos (if stickies on point). Scouts/snipers/soldiers are rarely worth chasing. If in doubt, ask yourself 'what is stopping my team from winning?', and then go kill it!

 * There's a little code : if you're standing in a good position, you're unhurt, you're a suitable class and you call 'medic!' ... I'm going to assume you're asking for that uber. Occasionally people do this and then do daft things like run back into spawn.

 * If your uber hasn't won the game, try and return to your team with your medic. Your medic will love you very very much.

Defending:

(Note you can be attacking an enemy sg/tp even on defence ; this is about defending the base)

 * Often it's about out lasting an enemy uber. If they were ubered before you were, your medic is hoping you'll take them out after it expires. If you just stick around and kill them when they're normal again, job done. It's not normally a good idea to run away from an ubered duo.

 * You can block enemies just by sitting in front of them, ubered. This is very, very annoying for the attacking team, and so is a good thing to do.

Panic Ubers:
 
 * If you get an uber for no apparent reason, your medic is probably nearly dead. If you can kill the threat -> happy medic -> uber love at a happier time. We don't expect miracles here.

 * Got an uber as an Engie or Sniper? Sometimes it's you or nobody - do your best, and everyone will be impressed if you save the game. I've seen engies and snipers do remarkable things with it.

 * Sometimes we'll uber too late and miss you ; sometimes you try your best and the sentry won't die. Don't worry about it. It happens Smiley

Mostly for HWs, but everyone else also: do NOT panic if the medic doesn't uber you at once, just keep running. Every second he doesn't uber you is one more second of uber in the end. And even If he ubers you at the very last moment and you only have 1 hp left, you still are invulnerable, but have a lot more time to take that sentry out.

I might as well add a couple of points from a target's POV.

Ubers on attack are most often used for taking out SGs. So if you're a Pyro or Demo this is what the medic will expect you to do. However, you'll be much more effective if you know where the sentries are first, hence why if I'm playing Demo you'll hear me easking every minute (if not more often Wink). Rest of the team: keep the uber targets informed. Smiley

Seeing as every second counts, I reckon without intel I can always hit one Sentry, two if I'm lucky and don't get knocked back. However if I know what I'm expecting, I can hit two reliably, plus dispensers and possibly a third SG depending on placements.

Oh, final point (I'm full of advice, y'see), an SG takes four stickies, so this means you can take two without reloading, even if they're far apart. When going for multiple sentries, lay four at the base of one, detonate, and then move on to the next. While it may be satisfying to detonate all buildings in one go, you risk them being removed if you wait.

Mode I'm pretty sure sentries can be destroyed with 3 stickies.

A couple of extra points from me:
Please look after your medic and tell them if you running off in a new direction or if you see a sniper/spy/uber heading their way.  Remember your life is less important than a 90% charged uber.
Medics if you're healing some one and for what ever reason decide to stop please say so. I have jumped out to attack people thinking I had a medic to back me up and died pretty shortly afterwards!

Some more tips on uber management, written for demomen especially...

1 - Don't reload when you are übercharged. There are few uberworthy classes that reload fast enough to warrant this; usually you are just wasting your time doing something you could have done before, in hiding, when you had cover and were safe. That point is important, so let me reiterate it: Do not reload when ubercharged.This kinda leads me to
1.1 - Reload before you get ubered. There are few things worse than seeing a demo you just ubered fire off a single grenade, then reload four and die by the time he's done since the uber ran out.
2. If your weapon is empty, switch to your secondary (which should also be fully loaded before you get ubered). This counts doubly so for the scotsman: Usually as a demo it's a good idea to plant your stickies when ubered. However if you do want to fire off a grenade or two, do that and then switch to the sticky bomb launcher. You can squeeze out a little more damage that way, but don't overdo it and end up wasting your time.
3. Know that the uber is not a miracle cure. You are still effected by knockback and a skilled soldier can juggle you backwards and keep you out of your target zone. A pyro's air blast works too, as far as I know. Trodden on some stickies while ubered? The blast may not kill, but it might just catapult you and your medic so far apart that the uber is broken. Also you could fly so high that you die from your crash landing and that's just a rediculous death.

Classes against ubers
Not many classes actually have a good defense against ubers, but here are the notable ones:
Soldier: If you're skilled enough (I'm not) you can break the link between the medic and the uber target with some well-placed rockets.
Demoman: Use the time you're evading the neon couple of DEATH to plant some stickies beneath their feet. Area denial works against everybody - the uber team will have to choose if they want to remain on the stickies or not and if they do either bomb them to hell and back after the uber wears off or try to seperate them by launching them in different directions.
Pyro: You might be able to seperate the uber team with a compression blast.

Everybody else has no real option except for hauling ass out of the kill zone.

Good point - from the uber target perspective, if you're running in to a tunnel and need uber at the other end, best to check that your medic is still there. We're easily blocked by enemies (ok, sometimes we get distracted by shiny things)

I'm pretty guilty of this, but if I'm following someone and don't think they can take out whatever happens to be around that corner I'll haul-ass out of there to save uber. Nothing personal, but my life is more important than yours!

This is my biggest complaint these days. Either team up for an uber or go. Don't make people think that they're getting an uber or a heal when you've no intention of sticking

I'm a crap medic myself - so I make this mistake. However, a heavy needs continual support during an attack - either give it (so the heavy can play that way) or don't (so the heavy can fall back and keep themselves alive).

They can, but if the medic doesn't go first and you end up suffering knockback from multiple sentries it can be quite a challenge to get said three positioned correctly for the destruction. For me this is obivously fine, but the topic is labelled "for new players". Wink

Oh, and @ Mosch, while generally advisable not to reload, and obviously you shouldn't ever set off with anything other than a full clip on all weapons, if you've already hit two SGs you can probably reload, place and set off enough stickies for another before you die (though not necessarily before the uber runs out, but hey, sentry destruction is more important than your life).

It all depends on when the uber is activated. Generally (since we're talking "new players" here) I'd say switch weapons when you run out, but you are of course right - a good demo should be able to get another round of stickies out, but this is kind of an exception.
