I think there is already an OTTD thread but it's so far back it's got lost in old post hell.

The Llama nights for this game have proved popular despite the game being launch in 1995 and Deadly has suggested organising a few OTTD nights.  Is anyone else up for this?

The game is completely free and can be found here http://www.openttd.org/en/.  Multiplayer is a joy to use and any additional files used in game are highlighted for download.

My personal preferences are for playing the game with the ECS industrys (make sure the town one is on top) and one of the many vehicle packs.  The 32bit graphics pack is also worth a look.

Two other mods I would suggest are the CHIPS Station Set (Adds extra tiles for stations that you can use to make them look cooler and be bigger (for catchment areas) without adding another track/bay, also shows cargo stacking up alongside the track tiles) and the NewCC Set (adds a secondary colour option to company colours and I think also added a few more colours)

Vehicle sets-wise I'm just using Aviator's Aircraft, mostly for Zeppelins

I also don't mind running a server for it - I can either host it off my home-server or host it off my PC like we have for previous llama nights (of course the caveat being whether or not I'm available to play on that particular occassion).

That is something.

It doesn't matter with minecraft for example, but how does it work in a game that starts in 1950, say, and then runs on a year by year basis.

Is there an end year?

How fast does it run?

You log off and it's 1965, come back the next day and it's 2010. Must work somehow though because there are servers out there

For dedicated servers there is a 'Min Active Clients' which pauses the server if there are too few active players. I guess if we set that to a reasonable number (so a couple of people can't just get a massive head-start / build huge networks while no-one else is on but allows for play to continue when a few can't make it etc.).

You can password protect your own companies so other people can't take them over (or you can invite a player to play for your company as well) as well as password protecting the entire server.

I think the game officially 'finishes' in the year 2051 but you can still carry on playing after that.

I went to go and try to set up my home server to run an OpenTTD server and found that my OS boot drive / SSD had died on me Sad

Won't be able to set this up for a while - until I get a replacement drive etc.

Rereading your previous post (the one before SSD dying :p) reminds me that we could play co-op (everyone joins the same company) which would allow others to maintain other peoples stuff when they aren't available

It does make the initial start slightly slower as we would only have one company's worth of loan at first, but I like it for making giant rail networks as you don't have to build around other peoples lines, you can just connect up to them :p

I have managed to set up the server now (I think) - I'll need monkeys to test that it can be connected to outside of my local network but it's listed on the master server list. The password is 'wdg'.

It's running Millicent's Map that he sent me.

At the moment the minimum number of players to unpause is 2 - but if people want I can change that. It's also running V1.3.3 which only came out 10 days ago so you'll probably need to update to join.

Edit: The game doesn't seem to have any built in functionality to load the latest auto-save on startup which means if the server shuts down, it'll load the empty map again - trying to find a solution but if anyone has any ideas then please let me know!
