Anyone even care anymore?

I want to buy it but theres are 11 "exclusive" DLCs that it just seems pointless because I won't get the full game until they stop assing about. 2 of which were for steam preorders so are being held back from sale for awhile and one that has never been on steam. WHYYYYY. Also its ridicolous how much effort it is to even discover all this crap. I'd have bought a deluxe edition by now if it was easy.

Arrr shiver me timbers, I wanna be a pirate so o'course I care.
I don't really care about the AC stuff in it though, looking forward for a piratey sandbox game... and, like with previous AC titles, I'll just wait for next year to buy it when the inevitable special deluxe xpto edition patched and with all the dlc included is on sale at a non-euro site

Eyo Im like 2ish hours in it and having a pretty good time BUT we'll see. I gave 3 a fair chance last year but holy fuck that game had the worst pacing ever, it was so boriiiiing and tedious with its awful missiondesign like the eavesdroppingstuff. They actually threw one of those at me right at the beginning of this game, but they changed it a bit, it didnt have a straight up failstate anymore, when I got detected the guys I was listening on tried to ran away and I had to chase em down again, so thats a good thing atleast.

Its got the pirate feeling down pretty well TNG. Shipcombat was by far the best part in 3 so for them to make it a main thing in their next game was a smart choice, theres some cool new things to it like leading rogue waves so your ship doesnt burst and evading windgusts etc.

The backstory to it is actually pretty amusing, lots of 4th wall breaking but the way they did it is really clever.

It also runs surprisingly well, I have almost everything cranked up and its smooth and looks really nice. Still Ubisoft deserve to die for still enforcing black borders on 16:10 resolutions argghhhhh

Yeah I saw giant bomb's quick look for it and suspected it might be the game for me, although I was a bit cautious due to AC3. I'm a bit obsessed regarding missing components of a game and hate to fork up piecemeal for dlc so I'll just wait for awhile but it is good to know I'll be getting what I'm looking for.

I've now completed the main mission of AC4 and I think it's really, really good.
I couldn't complete AC3, the only non-handheld AC game I haven't completed, due to it's pacing and really bad (or flat) characters, but AC4 doesn't have that problem.
Ship combat is really fun, and the entire piracy thing is working well.
The story is also really, really good.
As for the DLCs, I didn't know they existed when I bought it, and I think most of it is some kind of cosmetic thing.
Of course then there's all the collectibles, but I've never been one to 100% games so I mostly ignore it.

Yeah I agree about the pacing. Im slowly getting forward in the game and its always thrown new stuff at me sofar, Ive gotten to a second eaves dropping mission but once again it didnt have a straight up failstate so that was really cool.

My favorite part about the game sofar has been collecting shantys (which is basically the replacement for the Washington manuscripts in 3) for your crew to sing while youre sailing around. Yeah the pirate feeling is pretty cool, thats prolly the first game that has come close to some noname jowood pirate game I got on a freeware cd a looong time go (like seriously noone knows this game, I still have the cd lying around here but no record exists of this, which is a shame because its such a cool and educational game). I might stream that when I get VM running on this, 8.1 doesnt even wanna launch the setup.

There were two pretty good 3rdperson-sort-of-RPGish games, Sea Dogs and it's sequel initially called Sea Dogs 2 but later adapted to use the (then new) Disney franchise Pirates of the Caribbeans, that gave you the freedom to just sail around the Caribbean trading, assaulting ships, searching for buried treasures, pillaging towns, doing quests and a bunch of sidequests, buffing up your crew and your ships (you could get a fleet going), managing relations with the different foreign powers, etc... it was a game by Akella ("We have great ideas but don't know how to execute them") and published by Bethesda ("Quality Assurance? What is that?") and it had a considerable amount of crashes, broken quests and bugs but after all the patching and improvements done by the modding community it became a pretty awesome pirate game although nowadays the game really shows its age.

Caved and bought this to have a chance at playing the multiplayer before the population flatlines (the fact I caught it for £20 in an Amazon sale helped). Anyone else who bought it on PC up for stabbing each other?

sigh, I only bought ass pirates the other week. One of the sale trading cards has the black flag on it though so looks like this is a sale headliner.

As far as the game goes, its a decent improvement over 3. I don't like everyting about the new ship combat, it actually seems less tactical to me, I just don't bother blocking damage at all anymore, it was absolutely essential to in 3 and part of what made the naval combat so good tactically. Otherwise its pretty solid, the characters are more interesting, you actually have motivation to chase most collectables and earn money, the inevitable silly mini-game this time is fleet management, which works well as part of the companion app, the companion app is surprisingly real time and has a decent map and a few other neat features. The fast travel lets you jump to any island or viewpoint within a city which vastly simplifies stuff. The tutorial segment got massively less instrusive, you are free on the tutorial level to explore the whole area and do stuff it hasn't taught you, then you are free to explore the first city, then you are free to explore the whole ocean. Theres a little restriction as you build up to owning your own ship but its not the horror of AC3. The awful watchtower mechanic is replaced by naval forts, which give you map coverage in the same way but are far more epic to capture than burning some guys tower of wooden sticks. By the end I was a little bored of the standard collectables hunt of ass creed but its decent. Unfortunately its devoid of parkour, and there really aren't any epic ruins to jump all over, just a few mayan ruins which don't offer any challenges. The DLC also got even lazier. Previously you'd get a special mission which was mildly challenging and at the end a prize. The new junk is literally just an island with 3 chests on it and your only goal is to find the viewpoint so you can then take a leisurely stroll over to where the chests are.

I'd summarise it as wind waker but less cutesy and more stabby, and a fast travel system that actually puts you where you want to go instead of 5 islands away. I'd put it in the just cause league of open world, its just ashame the naval combat got dumbed down and its just not quite as fun as blowing up every army base across panau.
