As I suspect a most of the server traffic comes from people who have joined WDG community group and react to notifications that the server is filling.... is it worth looking into a plugin that adds a command which can be used in the the motd/server chat notifications to make it easier for people to get to the group page. Something that allows someone to type a command like !group or !join and it bring up the group page? (we might already have this I haven't looked).

There are often new players who say they enjoy the server and its seems much easier to just tell them to type in !group and can then just click on the group join button straight away so they don't forget?

This actually sounds like a very good idea.
It might be a good solution to the discussion whether or not to add banners with "WDG is recruiting".

Through the !join command they would be able to join the steam group, and on the steamgroup they can find all the information about WDG looking for more members and all the other info.

Sounds like a smart idea.

That sounds like a good idea. We need to think of more creative ideas in that sort of vein.

It would also reduce one of my post-game jobs: going through the names of everyone that had played on the server that evening, checking if they'd played there before and, if they'd seemed decent (regardless), inviting them to the Steam group.

So far the update doesn't seem to have made that much of a difference to us *touch wood*

The servers that seem to have suffered are the ones that seemed to 'magically fill' during the day with QPs and then stay full. Now they're empty most of the time.

Servers like ours that rely on the graft of regs to start them up, who are then joined by more regs and only after that topped up by Quickplay, seem to managing about the same.

We're still getting very new players through with only a couple of hours of TF2 though maybe we're getting slightly more experienced players than before. It's hard to tell.

Anyhow, it's looks as if we're still providing a positive experience as we're getting players returning. I still like Jebus's idea of trying to provide more information about community activities etc. The overall reduction of QPs coming to the server may start to have more impact as time goes on so we still have to put ourselves out there.

By the way, Valve have indicated that they considered this last update the 'nuclear option'. They obviously felt they had to do something about the premium servers and new players because it was getting stupid. They may do something later to help legit community servers caught out, but who knows.
