It's got to be a thing sometime. It'll probably screw up Quickplay so we'll have to be prepared for the server not to fill but I reckon we could get enough TF2 diehards together for a couple of hours.

We'll just need to get the word out.

iirc, the popular versions of the prophunt, TF2ware and Dodgeball mod are closed source and only a handful of servers are allowed to run it.

I'm unfamiliar with TF2ware but Prophunt is always fun. Same for Dodgeball, as long as you have a low ping. And what about Hidden?

Also why not use this as an opportunity to rent a 3rd party server to test for a month or two? You don't screw up Quickplay and gives Berath etc a chance to learn how to admin a server via the host's admin tools before you move the main server?

If the host is good then you can add the main public server there. If not then you have lost nothing and know which host not to use and ovoid another potential move of the main server again.

That's a thought. If nothing else renting a server before we switch and running something on it.

I don't know half these fancy maps though (Hidden is news to me). Have to make sure that it's a date that people who know what's what can make it

A quick summary of the ones I know:

I tried Hidden once in a US server and it looked fun but with the lag I was dealing with it was hard to enjoy. I haven't looked for it since so I don't know if there are Euro servers running it but with the amount of crazy stuff that shows up with a cursory glance at the server browser, there's probably one available somewhere.
Basically it takes you to an Arena mode map where one player becomes a mighty Spy with special powers (able to mega-jump and with a special "scare" ability that stuns players and that you can use once in a while, similar to Saxton Hale mode) that has to hunt the remaining players in the server. I think that whoever kills the Spy (or does the most damage) then takes the role for the next round and so on.

Another mode that I've only tried in american servers is the Huntsman Hell where everyone plays as an overpowered (even more than usual I mean) huntsman that can mega-jump and other fun stuff. Plenty of jarate thrown around, too.

Dodgeball has you playing on custom maps as pyros on opposing teams that can only reflect colour-coded rockets (blue pyros can reflect blue rockets and red pyros red rockets) that spawn on the battlefield. The game goes on until one of the teams gets wiped out. I've seen many euro servers running this mode and it is helpful for everyone to have low pings due to all the reflecting required.

In Prophunt you play as either a pyro or a random object/prop. If you are a prop, you have to hide in the map and survive until time runs out; if you are a pyro, you have to, well, hunt the props! Again, not a hard custom mode to find on european servers; some actually use this mode for their humiliation phase at the end of a round on regular maps.

I don't know if they fit into this, but there are also some custom maps like Toyfort (regular RED vs BLU but in a map that makes you feel like a tiny toy soldier in Toy Story, fighting around the house), Saw^10 (saws everywhere... and a wooden cow) or TrainSawLaser (the name says it all) that might provide a different flavour to the regular TF2 experience.
