Looks like it's aimed at Highlander (at least initially) which makes sense, Highlander being closer to pub play.
Also possibility of weapon balancing as a result.

Highlander is already extremely close to pub play as it is. Plus it's very accessible and, because it's close to the pub game, makes the transition from public play to HL much easier.
People moaning about the lack of 6s are the same people that will be moaning about any of these Valve implemented PuGs getting infested with newbie players.

Exactly. I mean its cool if youre new to competitive play and just want to join an all-access pug group, but if you want some actual good games, theres really no other way than to be a bit elitist and make a closed group or have some contacts to mixes. Theres new pickup channels coming and going every few months and they always die because they have no restrictions, so experienced players get sick of playing with people that have no idea how 6v6 works. So if theyll make an official lobby system for this, it will get a bed reputation soon just like TF2Lobby (or 2008/2009-era Multiplay, oh god). For Highlander I dont really mind tho, thats more of a fun, unbalanced format anyway. As long as it implies that Ill be able to get into a game in a matter of minutes and get the role I want and have some sort of leaverprotection like Mobas, that sounds pretty good, could be a nice timekiller.

I wonder what it might mean in the long term for clan/community servers.
Already I think you're getting longer term players moving into Highlander as a more refined pub (I don't count 6v6 so much because it's so different), often playing it in preference. This might increase once Highlander becomes even more accessible to more people. Karthus is almost a case in point; already he has said he'll use it a nice timekiller. He doesn't pub but there may be many others who at the moment do.
Community servers may become harder to sustain on a day to day basis, apart from as a purely social meeting/playing place.

The mode utilises every class in the game, it's widely broadcasted for top level highlander (VTV, TF2TV - Even BlackOut Gaming are promoting their own TV channel) and a lot of public servers openly advertise their community highlander team.
Most players, in my experience, don't wish to compete in the mode because they're "not good enough" which isn't the case. Some people aren't interested in competitive TF2 either. In the case of the latter, how do you appeal to the unappealable?

It is accessible yes, but you still need a team at the moment which, if you haven't the connections, still takes some work and if you have a team you still need them around to play.
But that is what I'm saying really, it is getting more and more accessible. When I first started and played pyro, I thought any sort of comp was totally irrelevant, I don't think this is the same anymore with the growth of HL. This move would increase the accessiblity again, making the process easier..so what will be the impact? (I suspect a lot of TF2 players don't know about TF2lobby).
Though don't get me wrong, I like the idea of just being able to jump into a HL game and it's interesting if Valve has taken note of comp, especially if it leads to weapon changes.
From what I've encountered, most comp bashing is 6v6 bashing and that mode is the mode which puts off most people because they see it as 'too difficult' and excluding. Highlander doesn't seem to give people that impression so much and they are a lot more comfortable jumping into a HL team or game. Again making it more logical that Valve should support HL first.

Your description of me is not that off. I dont like public TF2 anymore, its absolute trash now compared to what it used to be a couple years ago, I only really log on when were scrimming or mixing. So a system where I could easily get into a competitive highlander game would be pretty cool!There used to be an EU highlander pickup channel in IRC but it died because they didnt really promote it well enough, I really liked the concept of it, shitty players dont really have that much of an impact on that style of game because it requires less coordination than a 6v6
As to what Cruelcow is saying, maybe just import the Dota 2 system of having a level, you get set amount of points per finished game, when you reach 1000 points you level up and get a guaranteed drop in addition to a random chance of getting one.

Without much deep thought on it, it seems a LoL-style solo/team split queue could work - matchmaking could form teams out of solo/duo/whatever number players at a similar skill level, and winning rounds could contribute to an MMR. If you had an existing team you could queue as a 9 and get match against other 9s.
It would need some work around class picking; first thought is you could queue for a specific class slot, but could lead to massive queues for the more popular classes. Call option is out, it's retarded in LoL (MID OR FEED) and it would just lead to endless whining in TF2 when everyone wants to be a soldier.

Role matchmaking is something that LoL would greatly benefit from with its very strict metagame. From my experience in WoW it definitely works, there you can queue up for the 3 roles of the trinity (Tank, Healer, DPS). Ofcourse everyone wants to DPS because thats the easiest role, usual waittime there is 5-10 minutes. If you queue up as Healer or Tank you instantly get into a dungeon. It works and also helps encouraging people to play a less popular role for the sake of faster queuetime.

You'd need be able to queue for multiple classed ("I can soldier or demo").
In LoL they don't let you queue for roles because that'd force a stale meta (their words). Highlander wouldn't have that problem, its meta is stale by definition.

Which is so hypocritical since they design all their new champions since Yorick after this exact metagame. Theres no reason to not implement it into their soloQ system, it reduces pressure and rage in the lobby and it wont change anything about their meta anyway since they are currently not planning on shifting away from it anyway, just look at how they present their LCS or any proleague, players are labelled by their role. How are you supposed to change the meta to something like a traditional trilane like in Dota when a proteam always has their "Jungler"? I dunno its just dumb, its riots fault the metagame has become so strict, both by their champion design and their way of promoting the game.

Servers could be an issue..they've managed with MvM, communities have their own servers there too.
Anyhow, it could dissolve the barrier between pub and HL.
I'm not sure how Valve would present it, but I could see a new player logging on and just seeing 3 game modes:
the one where you play against robots
the 9v9 one where there's only one of each class
the crazy mode with 12v12 upwards and anyone can play anything
they'd have no real concept of HL being competitive, they'd just go straight in.
(is this where some form of ranking needs come into play?)

Dont see servers being an issue, they use official ones for Dota 2 aswell and that game has around 500k players during peaktimes.
