I think everyone knows that WDG have a dedicated server (if you don’t, we do)
Over the past year it’s become clear that the dedicated server is
1) Expensive (increasingly as the clan has grown smaller, we've had WDG whip rounds; fun but there is a limit)
2) Takes time/effort to maintain (and requires technical knowhow)
and our use of it doesn't justify (1) or (2)
So we've decided to go back to using hosted servers. For the cost of the dedicated server we could run 5 x 25 player servers.
Our basic minimum is a 27/28 Slot Public TF2 server, 20 Slot Private TF2 server with FTP and stv access and a 50 slot mumble, preferably from the same supplier. With this we would still have a pot of money left over which the community could dip in and out of to rent servers for other games we're playing/want to play (e.g. DayZ, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare), renewed on a month by month basis as required. For TF2, it would allow us to experiment with crit-vote servers, custom map servers etc
If we react to games that are popular it might even bring in more new people which I think we'd all want. Good community/community-growing games seem to be getting rarer.
Anyhow, we’re now looking at potential hosts. Of course we want a reputable one.
Currently we’re looking at:
- CKRAS €20 per month
