I have my new graphics card and it's shiny but not shiny enough.

I've discovered that I've only 2GB RAM (DDR2 as well). This is holding back the shininess of my card.

So obviously a RAM upgrade is required but the motherboard is old, I think I remember that the memory I have is the fastest it would take which is several years old fast now.

It's pretty clear then that a new motherboard is required, plus processor so I can buy some more and better RAM. It makes sense.

But

The i5-3570k sounds the way to go for the processor but with which motherboard? Any recommendations?

and it seems as if there is a new processor release/socket (Haswell chipset) just about to come out which is of course incompatible with the current Ivy Bridge processor/chipset. Now I'm wondering if I should wait for this, firstly in terms of upgradability and secondly if I decide I'm not bothered....because there might be a price drop of the old when the new comes out.

I know ocuk do bundles which are made up of mobo,processer and ram. They look to be good prices. I don't really know enough to recommend taking the plunge or waiting, I'm sure someone will have a better idea

This is an interesting question.

Speed increase vs. performance for gaming, it's not worth going to Haswell for the CPU alone. However, there are some really nice features with the new chipsets from various manufacturers, such as mobo side HDMI in.

The truth is though, the i5 is more than good enough for gaming right now and a better option for a performance boost down the line would be SLI or a graphics card, not a CPU increase.

The price that the i5 is currently is still immense value and if it drops more, it will be even more of a bargain.

Pair it with an SLI/Crossfire enabled board, 16GB of RAM and you're flying. Only pay for features on the motherboard that you will ever use, they are tiered that way.

Replace the card in 2 generations, or pair it with another if you feel the pinch and don't go overboard on your base system. Be glad to help with build advice, just grab me.

Omni has pretty much covered everything, I personally don't think that you're going to need 16Gb of RAM (8 should give you no problems IMO) but RAM isn't all that expensive, so I guess you might as well go for it if you have the cash (assuming you have a 64-bit OS).

I was suckered into getting 16gb. Sounds mighty impressive when asked what ram your pc has.

8gb is nothing and already a bottleneck for me. Do more with your pc terror.

Looks like Haswell is the best way to go if you're upgrading from an old chip (but not Sandybridge or Ivy Bridge) especially as I won't be overclocking. Apart from that it looks like it's really aimed at laptops.

Prices of processors and motherboards don't seem much different

So, I'll probably be going with Haswell but not quite yet as I've got a new hall carpet instead this month. The joys of being sensible

Motherboard wise, If you're not overclocking or going SLI, just get a budget board. If you're buying new, go Haswell, you'll make up any cost difference in power savings on your leccy bill. Otherwise grab a second hand Ivy or Sandy Bridge bundle.
Quad Core i5's of any generation have more than enough power for gaming, I don't see this situation changing for years.

Just ordered Haswell bundle from Overclockers.  Should have it sometime next week

Went for the i5-4670k which is the equivalent of the  i5-3570k .

And it came today. Rather sooner than I thought.

On the overclockers site it said bundles took 5-7 days for assembling, testing etc before delivery. Ordered said stuff, it said 'arrive following day' on options which I selected. Was confused. How could both be true? Rang overclockers who said, yes it was 5-7 days, I'd be getting it next week. Arrived home, it had been delivered and left with neighbour (I have several lovely neighbours).

So huzzah
