I'll be semi honest when I say I bought an entire new gaming PC just to be able to play the standalone on full graphics...
It genuinely looks like incredible.

Well, at least they're still working on it http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/(I think ARMA whatever was on sale earlier but I didn't think it was cheap enough)

Well I've bought it. Could probably get it cheaper in a Steam sale but hey. Would probably only have saved the cost of a sandwich, coffee and a slice of cake anyway (that's how I usually cost things up).
Someone said it would at least give me the feel of the standalone and I could be waiting a while. There was talk of the alpha coming out in June but even if I got on that, I don't fancy playing something that's most likely even buggier than the mod
If anyone has any recommendations for good hive servers, just let me know (private or public). Don't know if Terror still has his.

Probably won't be on until Sunday by the time I've downloaded it
(I'll probably be looking up servers anyway to see if I can find one with a good rep)

http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/28/dayz-standalone-limited-alpha-test-begins-public-alpha-on-track/The mod is quite tricky to set up. The basic mod is easy, but then it's making sure you have all the latest patches. It doesn't seem to work with Steam though my install insisted it was up to date. Every server I tried to join ended up kicking me because I was missing something or other. In the end I went with one of the specialist launchers. I tried both, dayz commander and Six Updater, and settled with Six Updater. Had to install in custom mode otherwise both seemed to try and get you to download and autoinstall toolbars and rubbish. I wasn't too happy about that but I suppose they have to get their money somehow. (it's also very easy to find yourself downloading the toolbar etc from the sites themselves, the download icon for that is not clearly differentiated from the download icon for the launcher) Anyhow, once I've got my head around it, I'm very happy to try and organise a Dayz evening at some point

We should sort this though I've no idea what to look for in a server. Is emptier better? Or fuller with it becoming more of a PvP sort of thing? If it doesn't make a Llama Night it might be worth asking who'd be still interested. I'm not sure apart from us.

For beginners, emptier server is better,
Must for me: 3rd person crosshairs no tracers no names join at day time
Best is to use DayZ Commander, helps a lot. Even with set up of the game.
