I'm not sure what the problem is, but I seem to get a lot of drops when I play on the WDG server (my internet connection drops and I have to reboot my router)

Last night I was playing TF2 on a couple of other servers and then BF3 and didn't get one disconnect. Tonight, I think within about 15 mins I had one, and then at least one more. It's different from the server going down because I stay connected to the Internet with those.

It's been happening for a while now.

Don't  know if anyone has any suggestions. It's not a big problem, just means I keep dropping out of game.

Ok...so I started to mention some of these things yesterday but I'm putting them here to try:

1) Check your rates in TF2
In console check the values of the following:
rates
cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate
For me, these are 25000, 66 and 66 respectively.
It's unlikely to help, but it should make TF2 less laggy in general.

It sounds like it could be a routing problem between your PC and the Server, rather than a generic internet problem if it only occurs on our TF2 server so you can try the following:

2) To see if it's your routers firewall - put your TF2 PC in the DMZ (temporarily) - this will forward *all* traffic to your internet IP address to your TF2 PC - this rules out it being blocked by a firewall for mistaking it for DDoS attacks - I think it's most likely this as you say that voice chat often still works so it could be blocking certain types of traffic.

It also seemed OK after you reconnected yesterday - which makes me think it might be your router rather than your ISP.

3) Try running a continuous ping to the server (open up cmd - type ping -c server.wdgclan.co.uk) and leave it running for a considerable length of time. press ctrl+c when your finished and see if there are any dropped packets etc.). If this has problems - it could a problem with your ISPs routing to the server. You can also try running traceroutes to see what the path to the server is and see if it's different when you get disconnected and when you don't.

What router are you using and what ISP are you with Berath?

I certainly think this is a routing issue of one kind or another and if it's not your direct route to the server, which Deadly's ping test will discover, then port forwarding should fix you up nicely.

I can't see why Steam won't work in the DMZ, but I can see why Valve would say that to ensure users don't have all of their ports exposed, makes business sense. Either way, there are a list of ports you could open to see if it helps ease the problem a little bit.

I'll try your suggestions, Deadly, and see what happens.

I'm still with Demon (they offered me more for less after I exceeded my download limit). I do have a feeling that it is router/routing/port issue rather than an isp issue. I've had problems in the past with my ISP, in those cases I would just disconnect when I was browsing plus every time the phone rang (one reason why I discouraged people from phoning me). The ISP did some tweaking and it seems to be okay now.

This is rubbish. Steam support obviously knows nothing about networking.
Steam will work fine until your unfirewalled PC is choked to death on malware. If you're running a software firewall you'll be fine.

This is a red flag for checking your microfilters. Make sure EVERY extension that has something connected is going through one. Try swapping your existing ones out with new/spare ones.

I went through the micro filter checking before; I bought a new one and everything (I also bought a new modem). My ISP did loads of line checks but stopped short at booking engineers to look at the line...they did the usual thing of telling me that if they had to come out and check they'd charge me £180 if it turned out to be my fault.

In the end I just said how the hell am I supposed to be able to tell as a bog standard person whether it is my equipment or not. Basically I'd been suffering almost two years of disconnects, 2-3 per evening by the end, because I have no training in telephony or networks.

So the engineers looked at the line, did some adjustments and I've had no trouble since; and they didn't have to come out in the end.

The WDG server issue may be connected with this but it seems such an isolated case.

Well TBH the server has been crashing a lot lately. Mostly its a complete crash with a quick server restart by watchdog.

Rather than going through the hassle of trying to figure out which (if any) mod is causing the server to hang, can you not tap up some fellow gamers and modify a config/setup used by another clan that has no known issues? Might save some time overall.

Would be handy to know what router you're using as well, just incase there's any default options that could be causing you to suffer from random disconnects.
