Right so Iv'e moved into my new Student house, along with 6 other people.

I put my foot down that we get the fastest availible internet (50mb/s), which we did. Now my problem is, during peak times I literally hover around 100ms and I truly don't understand why.

Is there any way I can seemingly 'prioritise' my device for bandwidth usage? Majority of these people are girls and have no fucking idea how any of this works so I'm not worried about any of the reprocussions, they can watch X-factor later.

Any clues? I'm currently connecting through the VirginMedia Superhub.

I don't think the superhub supports QoS, sadly. They've been talking about a 'proper' way of making it act like a bridge so you can put your own router in front of it for ages, but not sure if that's appeared yet.

Speed and latency are two different things

Just because you have 50Mbit doesn't necessarily mean it's a fast responsive 50Mbit.

Wont help fix the problem, but may help to understand the ssetup...
a - use speedtest when people are in, and when people are out (but still in normal day hours), this should tell you if the problem is them

b - try speed test at night, 3-4am, see if any different.

I thought cable was always a bit laggy (no proof of this) so not sure if it's just that?

Done all the regular checks mate.

Basically been on the phone to Virgin for about an hour, as usual we finally reached the conclusion that I told them at the beginning, Engineer should be coming round on Tuesday to look at it.

Speedtest showed when it was first introduced (did this 7 or 8 times at different times of the day) that the average download speed was about 25mb/s (we live incredibly near the exchange, I can walk there in about 4 minutes) Upload was around 8mb/s .

Download just now was a whopping 1.6mb/s, Upload was 6mb/s, absoloutely zero idea what the crack is with that. (That's with no-one downloading / using anything and done in Safemode with networking).

Pretty irritating, but I guess we'll see on Monday - I miss downloading from Steam at 5mb/s.

Have you tried asking them to optimism your connection for ping, I did that with sky and it dropped my ping from 80-90ms to 20-30ms. But I think you need a tech support fella who actually knows what ping is and they are in short supply.

I think its known as the "gamer filter" that's what the tech guy from Sky called it when I spoke to them about something else.

I had to phone up virgin because of they throttled my speed. Just explained what I could to them about it mostly being used for gaming and they sorted it out for me. Can't say iv'e had any more problems with it after that

Ebuyer have some decent prices for T-link powerline adapters.

Same for both wired and wireless, I actually can't play TF2 I don't understand it. Everything else seems to work fine, but not perfect. Online games are just a no-no.

I don't think you will want to hear this but virgin in some areas just gets horrendous around peak times, I went through this last year and after months of ringing up and moaning and trying everything all that happened was I got a discount off my monthly bills which is no use tbh. Don't give up though maybe it will be different for you, btw that upload speed is amazing!

Yea, I had the same issue. 6pm-1am the ping went to shit, tends to be over-utilisation i.e. taking on more customers than their exchange can handle. Fortunately in my case they did sort it out, although it did take like 2-3 months =/
