As a man of Kent I have successfully survived there for 38 years and counting. I work in Canterbury and it's definitely worth a visit for the history, bars and shopping (and students).
Why not buy a kitchen to take home with you

Train links are good, roads are good, I'd personally recommend driving but British fuel is expensive.
Other places worth a visit are Dover Castle which is awesome, give it a long day, it's huge. Avoid visiting Dover if you can though.
Edit due to work interruption:
I'd also recommend Leeds Castle near Maidstone (also worth a visit, mostly for the good shopping and Mote Park), Chatham dockyard. If the weather is good and you want beaches I'd recommend Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Minnis Bay in Birchington, Margate beach (and the newly opened Turner Center art gallery) or you could go down to Romney Marsh (good if you like walking, cycling and/or sheep) and Camber Sands.
There is a giant horse overlooking Folkestone and the UK Eurotunnel terminal. Its been there for about 10 years.
I've probably missed loads of places though.
