Funnily enough, quite possibly. The Sony handy-cam was having a little time out on the "record pause" function. All in all the set up was overly complex, but essential given the restrictions. Ideally I'd have loved to have gone with the software that Deadly recommended. The "XSplit" package. But my PC can't handle the demand of the screen capture, web-cam capture and then running the game and voice comes. So a hardware solutions is much more favorable.
So the setup on the night was a handy-cam pointing at me with the AV out from that into one of the channels on the mixer deck. The secondary DVI output on the graphics card going into a DVI to VGA adapter. That in turn going into a VGA capture box. And that then feeding into the other channel of the mixer deck. The audio out from the PC's sound card was going into a splitter and feeding both my headphones and an audio channel on the mixer deck. With the desk mounted handy-cam picking up my voice. The mixer deck then output this to the "S-Video in" on to the second handy-cam, that then fed that out it's fire-wire to my brother's mac book. Which then recorded it in quick-time.
The end result is less than ideal. The visual quality from the game looks pants. Playing in 4:3 again is weird. Also being distracted having to check the handy-cam every so often is a pain in the bum. But that said, I did kind of get what I was after. The banter was what I was really after. And the picture in picture concept worked like I wanted. Although in hind sight I would have placed my feed in the top left corner so as not to obscure the Mumble overlay.
So I have an idea. Again hardware based. No, I'm not upgrading my PC. Well at least not yet. I'm thinking of getting something a bit like this...
Roxio Game Capture - Play.comAlong with that I will need a DVI to component cable.
Adapter DVI-I - 3 RCA YUV Plugs - AmazonAnd a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2 RCA phono socket, although my brother probably has one or two of those. And I'll need some component cables to link the adapter to the box.
So with all that in place I should be able to play the game without having to monkey about with my resolution. Record in high definition. And I shouldn't need to spend time importing DV-tapes or messing around with file types. If I'm really lucky then it may also let me capture off my web-cam.
That's the dream anyway
