Basically I get disconnected every 20 secs or so then reconnected. I can't play any games online any more, obviously, and trying to surf the internet makes me want to cut myself. I've had problems before with the internet, but now it's reached a point where I am on a near constant rage. Any idea's before I ring my provider?

Contact your provider black, they'll get you to do all the usual mundane things like changing the micro filter and dancing around backwards whilst singing naked....

It's most likely noise on the line causing disconnects. Microfilters are the most common cause, they can and do go wrong. Check you don't have any unfiltered devices on the line too, like a sky box.
If you can, put up your router stats page.

Check logs in modem if possible, as said first things they say are 'replace micro filter' and 'test the connection in the house master socket' which is the socket that BT look after, the direct connection, what you can try... is on the master socket remove the face plate, there is another socket behind that, give that a go.

Other than that talk to ISP, they can do all sorts of funky shit, have much better logs, and can contact BT if its a line issue.

And if your with Zen or someone smaller/better the support might actually get done in less than a few weeks

It the router automatically assigning your IP address. Check the DHCP settings on the router, and check your network connection settings on your pc to make sure it's not trying to set its own IP address. Also try disabling any un-used network connections. It might also be that another computer on your network is trying to use the same IP address.

Look in Control Center for Network. If you have more than one LAN-Adapter choose the one for your internet connection (if necessary disable one after another to see which's the right one).
In the list select the TCP/IP protocoll, click properties. In the first tab on the property window you see in the upper half the options "Obtain IP Address automatically" or "Use the following address"



If you select the first option the router will assign an IP to your computer each time it connects. Unless you need a fixed IP for some reasons that should work fine.

On the router:
Look up how to access the options of the router (in many cases you can do this via internet browser). See if the DHCP service is enabled.

Do this, then report back.
