Have to play some more Dota 2, finish the tutorials perhaps and try out more heroes. All against bots so far, apart from one match - wasn't really good for learning because opponents knew what they were doing while I was still figuring the very basics. We split with bots.
On Sunday I played:

Sniper...easy to play but a bit squishy. Died a few times as I was getting the feel for his range and got too close.

Crystal Maiden - quite fun with her movement control plus attack. Is she a support? Didn't play her as one though built up her mana regen aura. Didn't seem too difficult to play.

Lion -most fun. Enjoyed mana drain though too tempting to get close to use it. Enjoyed earth spike too.

Kunkka - harder to play, less fun. Kept dying because I kept summoning the ship at any opportunity. He has this great ship that runs everyone down. Ship animation good to watch.

Treant Protector - least fun maybe. Tried him because he was a tree and I was told he had millions of health, could heal himself, would be invisible if he stood by a tree, had a skill that could heal everyone on the map. Sounded like a no-effort hero. Don't think I used him quite to his full potential.

Out of those Treant Protector is easily the most useful and universally most picked hero. I play him a lot when I dont get to carry, his Living Armor is just very strong for a global spell. Ive played him so much that I got accustomed to constantly switch the camera to every other lane to see if anyone needs it, once you can manage to do that while not risking your own life in your lane by walking into the enemy etc. his true potential unfolds.

His armor used to go through 7 damage instances at any level but they just very recently nerfed it very hard, its 4 instances at level 1 now. Its still incredibly strong for towerdiving or rescuing someone through a fight. Also dont forget you can heal towers, superuseful to stop pushes.

Beside from that, one of the reasons he is such a high-tier pick is because he of all the heroes in the game has by far the highest base damage (he starts at 89, average is around 55-60). That means you have it much easier denying last hits for the enemy which is usually what you should do in a lane as a support.

To answer your question, yes Crystal Maiden is played as a support. She is one of the best supports in the game in the early stages of the game since her prison is great for ganks and her first spell doest mass amounts of damage early on, she really falls off later tho, her movement speed is so low compared to other heroes so you will die. a lot. Her ult does crazy damage, but she is so vulnerable that most players dont even level it because they put themselves at great risk when trying to land it.

I had a feeling I was underusing Treant Protector 

He was so wonderfully tanky. I hadn't had a chance to read skills beforehand so I couldn't really get what I could do with them. I was also trying to work out the potential of Kunkka's third skill....the X marks the spot. Apart from moving an ally out of danger, I wasn't sure

Kunkka takes a long time to get good with because both his Q and his ultimate have a long delay and it takes some practice to get the range on the ult right. The X Marks the Spot is really great for ganks tho, especially at later levels it will make any movement for the next 4 seconds pointless as it teleports you back.

Watched Treant Protector in the game last night

I could see how he was working and how they were trying to use him from the casters' comments. It didn't really seem to be working for his team overall though :/

So yeah, could be fun to play and worth trying again. Still not sure about Kunkka though. Apart from the ultimate being fun to watch, by the time the ship got there, everyone had moved.

What an AMAZING Grand Final. Went over a full best of five with the first two games being stomps for both sides and then three ridiculously close games. Last one ending in a Backdoor push that Alliance won because their Puck player stopped two teleports that were going to stop the push. Well deserved win for Alliance, they played so well in the tournament.

Only managed to see the first two games , and some of the third before I had to go to bed. Saw enough anyhow to see that the threatened steamroll after the first game wasn't going to happen.

It took them 2 fucking years to do this.

But yeah theres a big holiday update coming tomorrow its also extending their tutorial apparently and helping you even more with item purchases.

They certainly seem to be putting more into helping newer players.

Quite frankly, LoL is rubbish in comparison for that. All you've really got is ARAM to give you a feel (Dominion is fun but a bit too different). Apart from that it's just dive in or play with bots. And as everyone has said, bots don't act like people plus if you play an all-bot game you can't predict what bots will be chosen for your side or where they will go.

Okay if you're playing with randoms it may be the same but at least some discussion might take place or attempt at balance...well I'd think anyway.

I'll take another look at Dota 2. I've been playing LoL a bit but if Dota 2 is better and more fun for newer players.......

Whats pretty cool about this update is that they give you free welcoming chests containing items from level 1-10 (thats roughly around 50 games Id say) and explanations on how to use them. Im lvl45 so I just got a ton of free stuff, ward skins, custom couriers, an XP boost, even a ton of gems that are basically Dota 2s counterpart of Strange parts (killcounters, wards placed, victories, I got some on my Lucifer sword that count enemies doomed   ) thats really neat. Definitely more "welcoming" than just getting 300 free Riot Points to spend on literally nothing.

I admit I've actually begun to enjoy the game while playing support for my friends. I still don't know what all the items and heroes do but it is interesting playing with a team that knows what's up and being at the right place at the right time doing that stun or buff that totally changes the flow of a losing teamfight. Plus, putting down that sentry ward to get the enemy Rikki by surprise... IN YOUR FACE, YE BACKSTABBIN' WEE MAN.

Also their tutorial is useful for explaining the basic concepts (last hits!), although I have yet to see what are the new additions to it. And my friends just offered me a Gandalf set for my most played hero, which is awesome
