I was going to replace my BIOS with more ram anyway, I just downloaded some from a link I found on /b/ so that should load my operation cystern in like 2 seconds anyway.

Srsly though, is this available for the consumer next year, or is that commercially? Pretty cool either way, glad I've started my new rig account already .

I remember reading about this a long time ago (>1 year). I'm not sure where they get their boot speeds from - mine doesn't take 30 seconds to get from power-on to windows 7 starts to load, and by the looks of this - it won't replace things like the POST checks etc. which take time anyway.

It sounds like a good move though - definitely some of the parts of BIOS are getting to be pretty archaic (PS2 mice/keyboard, floppy drives) without suitable support for modern hardware (e.g. booting from usb flash drives etc.)

This has been around ages and should have been sorted years ago, Almost as bad at IPv6 in that respect (problem recognised 20 years ago and protocol finalised 15 years ago, but everyone has gone LALALA and ignored it, so now we're 18months from address exhaustion with a fraction of 1% of the world set up to use it properly)

Apple has been using it ever since they switched over to Intel CPU's back in 2006.

My MoBo already _has_ UEFI support. And it's a one year old model. I'm not even talking about Apple computers using EFI since god knows when. How is this news?

UEFI is not going to make everything run smooth as silk, but I'm glad they're starting to think about throwing out the legacy cruft like bios disk interrupt calls and god knows what else has been dragged along since when 2MHz was considered "Turbo Mode".

Hmm? All modern BIOS' will run USB pensticks Deadly (at least, my ASUS one does and I know all newer Intel chipsets do)...BIOS might have some archaic features but it's not like it doesn't work properly!

But updates are fun, let's hope this one is a good change that allows at least more features and faster boot times. I'm going to check this out in more detail, the BBC piece read as a press release...here's hoping there isn't stupid DRM or anything!
