Child's Play is such a ridiculous "charity". There's the worst flooding ever in Pakistan, and they're still solely concerned with providing videogames for kids?! Makes me hugely frustrated at the world we live in.

Anything that paints gamers in a more charitable light then the slew of "CHILD PLAYS VIDEO GAME, GOES OUT AND KILLS BABIES" articles the mainstream media throw around is also A Good Thing in my eyes; this adds to the general positivity around gaming.

Shit, nobodies saying there aren't other problems in the world or that this is more important then Pakistan's floods but come on man! Lighten the fuck up, people are doing something silly to raise money for something good; shouldn't they be commended?

Without veering too far into politics, you can apply that argument to almost anything (why are people paying money for clans when they should be sending /that/ to Pakistan?). It might not be something I'd donate to, but I'm sure they're doing good work.

Just blame PA, and give your money to someone else, there a plenty of charities you could deride. Like the ones who raise money to give africans bibles (food and wells would be top priority for me), or animal shelters tbh (if we can justify meat consumption why do shelters look after pets that can't be rehomed, surely putting them down and spending the money on rehomable animals is better). Its down to personal taste. I agree its a bit local in thinking to my tastes but those kids are bored and need something to do. My charity money goes to cancer research atm.

It just disappoints me to see the massive figures rolling in and a particular 'charity push' by Valve for Child's Play when there are more, very imminent and serious problems facing the world right now.
Without veering too far into politics, you can apply that argument to almost anything (why are people paying money for clans when they should be sending /that/ to Pakistan?).
It's more the timing that gets me than anything. I'm sure the kids benefit a lot from Child Play's work, but it seems rather insensitive to me to go fundraising for something a bit trivial when you could be making a much bigger difference with your money somewhere else in the world.
And the "reward" of a special Steam Group for donators... give me a break. Good lord, at least it's not a special hat.

I've always felt child's play is muddied with PA willy waving and it feels like gamers trying too hard, like see we're not evil we gave games to kids! Its a reasonably noble cause but why should all gaming related charity events give money to child's play, we could as gamers support other causes, like this golden wrench event could have been for Pakistan. Of course valve and PA are American and thus don't know of Pakistan's existence or problems.
