I assume WoW is the worst for flame wars, but this if anything is going to exacerbate the situation. Solution: Don't play WoW.

We all show different personas in different places. I guess plenty of people say things on this forum they wouldn't want potential employers to read. Yeah, FB has privacy settings, but it's an awful trend.

Its a good thing when its optional deadly and if people want to do it then fine, and I approve of the optional b.net integration and friend search.

But its a stupid idea for forums. The whole anonymity leads to dickishness I think only plays a small part in internet stupidity. A lot of people are closeminded, jerks, unable to articulate themselves or easily frustrated and I seriously doubt would stop themselves flaming/trolling just because their real name is available, they have a captive audience for whatever reason when in real life you'd probably walk away. For them to stop doing so suggests a fear of retribution and what form is that going to come in, these people can't shun you socially for being a dick they are still an unknown online presence, but a presence who might not fully equate you to a human and has easy access to your personal information.

So to address your points more directly how exactly does it make them more accountable? They have nothing to lose socially, and most likely won't receive a bad reputation in real life for forum trolling (they might be a troll irl too tho). It was suggested by Blizzard that it brings accountability but right now I can't see how, unless you have a crippling fear of what random strangers from WoW think of you.

Privacy settings are still pretty lax with facebook, given your actual name and perhaps a few blizzard forum details and your IP is all the actually dangerous ones will need. I guarentee we will read about some dude killing some other dude over a wow/sc2 dispute that escalated from the forum to facebook into real life. Its already happened with some crazy asian players and their super serious attitude to mmos but this is just making that situation more likely

No. "Bad guys" still can use false names.

Also doing nothing bad doesn't mean nobody will hate your guts - people have planned to cut other players' power line in order to help a win in EVE.

And last but not least: even IF I enter my real name, it doesn't mean anything if you have a common name like mine. You all know it, so go ahead and try to google it. For every info you find that's really about me I'll give you a steamgame of your choice.

Yes, it cuts down on people making stupid posts, but the potential for abuse far outweighs this. Very few people can guarantee that their real name has zero net presence.

The answer is simply to use more aggressive moderation, rather than hoping the community governs itself - it works well on other large forums like OCUK.

This too there have been demands recently from parental groups (they've asked before) for stricter monitoring and control over what children under the age of 18 can do /interact with online. Stupid crap like this is ammo for them because obviously its extremely inappropriate for blizzard to be posting the real names of children. The proposed solution to this is we all start verifying our age via credit cards and things and your internet anonymity is truly dead at this stage.

Couple this with government shenanigans like ACTA which is a truly disgusting treaty (3 strikes for copyright infringement being a small part of the treaty). Although the UK government has said it will not bring in criminal fines and imprisonment per the treaty draft, anything agreed in the final version automatically overrules our own legal rulings seeing as its a treaty, this is why the EU is sexy (they make non-binding suggestions) as opposed to you will obey the US.

Blizzard have made a big mistake here, though it can of course still be rectified (if you've followed the Starcraft 2 chat room/LAN/cross-realm issues you'll know what I mean otherwise it's kinda irrelevant).

Sorry, but that seems strange for you to say. After all you did request you're real name not to be on the forum and didn't want it on the i40 attendance list either. I doubt it'd be that hard to find you if someone could remember any specifics about you, I'm sure you've told someone where you study or live which narrows it down better than Mr. X that lives in Germany. (Yeah I know you're real name and where to find it but I'm not gunna make it easier for someone who might actually try for some free games ).
