Hey Guys,

I just tried to install a trial of Nero 10, downloaded from the Nero website and it crashed while it was extracting.

Now my SSD is running ridiculously slowly...boot times aren't *too* horrendous but it takes a couple of minutes to open the task manager and things like sidebar gadgets take a LOT longer than usual to load.

I tried starting in safe mode - but the one time I tried it, it crashed after loading the next driver after the disk.sys driver.

I just popped in my Windows 7 disk and set it to do an automatic recovery - and it offered to restore my PC using a system restore point - but that seems to be taking forever.

Is my SSD borked and I need to send it off for a replacement, or does the hive mind have any other suggestions?

Check if trim is still enabled? There is a command line for it (in admin mode):

It's definitely *not* fragmentation related - it was far too much of a sudden change for it to be that. As I understand it - the slow-down due to fragmentation takes a while and only occurs when the drive is nearing capacity - I still had 10Gb free on mine so I don't think it's that.

The system restore failed - so I'm attempting to restore a disk image I took shortly after re-formatting a few weeks ago.

If that doesn't work - I'll try a fresh install.

If that doesn't work - I'll have to take out my SSD and do a fresh install back onto my Raptor.

I'll probably be out of action for a day or two maybe.

If you've got a backup image, run a secure erase on the drive (google hdderase and your drive type for guides), and then see if you can restore the image.

I did a format & re-image of the disk and it failed with an error saying that the device wasn't connected.

Am going to try a fresh install and then if that doesn't work - I think it's safe to say the drive is buggered and I'll be sending it back to Crucial as I believe it's still in warranty.

HDD erase is a bit better than a normal format, but if the drive isn't showing up in bios properly there's not much it can do.

There's a 5 year warranty on the m225's iirc, so shouldn't be a problem replacing it.

Like any other component, they can fail. They are definitely more reliable than a mechanical drive though. I've got four of them now, the first of them is around 9 months old, and not had issues with any of them.  In that time i've had two mechanical drive RMA's to deal with.

Yes, this. for all the benefits of SSD, I see little point if reliability is worse than a mechanical hard disc.

It's very unusual to see hard drives fail, but I seem to be reading more about SSD fails (and having one that keeps dropping from the BIOS etc).

Lucky for me I run a full mirror hard drive backup, so swapped disks instantly (bar a few missing windows updates). I can also recommend Bullguard backup and Paragon Partition Manager.

You could run that hard drive as a slave drive and try fix it from there or if it isn't recognized in the BIOS then it might be borked.

I reinstalled onto my Raptor for now - I tried plugging the SSD back in and formatting it - but it failed half-way through saying the drive had been removed :/ (it definitely hadn't)

I raised an RMA request with crucial, and without even asking what the problem was they have given me an RMA number. Sent it off to them today.

I seem to remember crucial being pretty good for returns stuff.

Just got it back from Crucial...and WOW. They sent me a 128Gb in replacement.
