I played the demo for an hour. I don't recall getting stuck, just that the levels felt the same and so did the objective etc.

I just felt that there was no real substance in the game, no real variation and just a couple of basic principles. Frustration, no. A feeling of not much immediate variety, yes.

If I am honest, games DO have to make an immediately good impression on me. I am a bit of a critic when it comes to films and stuff so I guess that I can form opinions quickly and find it hard to change them.

I also enjoy the more social aspect of gaming much more. I used to be a solitary games player for a long time, but soon discovered that out-thinking or out-playing your friends on-line is a much bigger buzz. I naturally expect the single player games to be exceptional in order to keep me hooked for enough time to get into them. Sadly, Portal just doesn't do it for me - and it was over hyped before I got near it too "You must play this" etc..

Well okay, the thing is, the whole beginning of the game, all this riddles in the controlled testing environment is actually just an extended tutorial. I don't know which level you've reached, but like the first 10 are just there so you can wrap your head around the novel gameplay idea. Then come the harder puzzles, then comes the actual game.

This isn't a shooter and it looks rather sterile and samey in the beginning, which makes sense when you reach the end. Can't force you to replay it of course, but hey it's free. Give it a shot.

Portal is better when you realise it's not a game, just an animated screensaver to play with while you listen to the dialogue.

quiet claws. then go play dear Esther . Perhaps puzzle with story is a more accurate description of portal than game but who cares. If you're only struggling to enjoy it because the "game" label doesn't agree with you lighten up

Nah I thought it was a very average game with great writing. The pacing is all out of whack, the tutorial aspects are overlong, and the level design is mostly dreary until the last level (when it ends). It's fine, but in my eyes it's a 70% game, not a 95% one, and I can't really understand the hype. The expansion pack (without the vocals/writing) was as dull as possible, which tells you something.

Not sure I'd have rushed to buy the devteam, but I suppose they were cheap, and it gave people something to mess about with while Valve got on making the real games

well I enjoy puzzle games so perhaps the gameplay was more my cup of tea. But it was never meant s a full game, it was some extra flavouring alongside ep2 singleplayer and tf2 multplayer in orange box

Not meaning to bait you, but why was it advertised and sold as a separate game then?

P.S.: Smiting for baiting. It was advertised and sold as a separate game because of its unexpected success and because Valve needs to make money. Besides, it doesn't cost very much now, does it?

Why should I wade through 'x' levels that I find boring to get to the "good" part of the game?

*EDIT* I'm sure we've all bought games that we didn't visit again because we couldn't get into them?

Usually I would agree, but this game is short and as I said, you've only seen the tutorial (I'll admit, they grossly overdone it, could have been much shorter). You wouldn't just dismiss TF2 if there would be a tutorial for it and you would find it boring, because it would tell you to push left mouse button to shoot and W to run forward, would you?

The lab levels just explain the basics for the most part. Valve thought the new teleport idea was so mind boggling that they had to explain every piece of it step by step. Clearly we all geniouses, so just play through that in 15 minutes and get to the real game.

Actually I'm just argueing for the sake of it. Have to distract myself from renaming folders from Surname, Name to Windows-Username. Which is as tedious as it sounds and no, I can't write a script to do that.

personally i really liked portal its only a very short game in itself and you have to see it as more of a puzzle game. Infact I think ill play it from scratch again tonight and see if i can finish it in less than 40 mins. I know one of my friends can do it in less than 10 mins.

No it can't. At least not if I spend a week coding stuff. It has to look up if the name actually still exists in the system, if it's free of typos and if it's in the right AD container. If it is, it has to rename it, if not move to the right location and if it belongs to an AD container that doesn't belong to our workplace it has to zip the folder and mail it to the department responsible. Smiting for being a smartass! (you're exceeding your karma quota).

EDIT: Damn it, have to wait one hour. John can you remind me to smite you later as I'll probably forget?

Actually possible, not sure if it's 10 minutes, but it's very very fast. Search for portal speedrun on yourtube. You'll be amazed (and dizzy).
