See? Companions can be cool. I'll have to stop reading this thread for fear of spoilers though; remember those tags guys! No idea who Boone is even, hehe.

Slight derail: Fallout 3 (thought before I necro the old thread I'd rather throw it in here)
Just started playing the GOTY Edition yesterday. I guess I should get used to the fact that the game sometimes just flips me the bird and crashes, right?

Yup. Bind quicksave to something easy to reach is my tip and just spam it .

Yo, tea, if you're just starting off, i recommend installing Fallout 3 wanderer's edition and setting it to Vanilla mode. From what I've heard, it really improved the game a lot for me, without altering it too much. Just basically seems to have given me a couple extra guns (but more importantly) really limited how much medkits and ammo there is. Goes some way to unscrewing the balance a bit.

Just found a balistic fist. Its a glove with a shotgun on the back that fires when you punch people.

Aparently theres a file called d3dl.dll in Oblivion/Falout 3 that you can add to your F:NV game files to make it run at about twice the framerate at no additional cost. All you need to do is copy it out and paste it into the main F:NV. I tried it last night and in an area I was getting ~10 FPS on low settings I now get a solid 40-50 on medium.
I'll post again tonight with the actual file name but I'm pretty sure its the above or something very very similar. Should be fairly easy to find.
Also, this game just gets better and better. Had a bit of a lull about 14 horus in but its now picking up again. No idea how far along the storyline I am; I don't think I've even got to the "main" area yet...
edit - Forgot my new favourite thing; 1) Equip balistic fist 2) Find molerats 3) Wait for molerat to start jumping animation 4) Target them with VATS, time it so you hit them in mid flight 5) Scream "FALCON PUNCH" 6) Wait 20 minutes for their body to come out of orbit.
I also did one mission only killing people by sneaking up behind them and asspunching their sphincter through their chest. Best weapon ever!

Similar trick helped a lot with the original port of GTA3 on the PC. I don't remember the name of the game, though. Was the same engine and helped with sound issues and crashes.

I've spent all this time not realising how to use ammo boxes and decrying the lack of bullets instead. I'm loving this game, although finding it surprisingly tough.

I find that certain areas are effectivly roped off by stupidly powerful critters roaming around. For example, one of my quests is only accessable (as far as I can tell) by going up a small ravine in a mountain, but this ravine is full of swarms and swarms of bug things with poison stingers that kill you in about 3 seconds and seem to take no damage from any of my guns. Same thing also happened when I stumbled across a supermutant encampment in my wanderings, as did my few encounters with deathclaws. And as for the ammo thing, it gets easier once you get companions; most of them have their own weapons with infinite ammo, so I tend to use them as bullet mules . Also saves more room in your own inventory for Doctors Bags and food/water.

How would Junta like it? Good solo play or is it multiplayer? I enjoyed COD4 and Mass Effect 2 recently.. just to give you an idea of single players that I've had fun with I may order from here: http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/13456533/Fallout-New-Vegas/Product.html

Solo. I suppose it's a bit like a clunkier, story heavier ME2. The shooting is worse but the RPG elements better. I think it might be a bit too rpgy for you John?
Perhaps worth looking up FO3 itself/FO3 GOTY? - much cheaper and it's very much more of the same.

If Cats done with it, I've got a retail copy that isn't linked to my GFWL account that you can borrow if you want? It'll give you a good taster of what this is about.
