He's not the only one who's a bit "wtf" but I'm more wondering where all the threads went.
The bit about lack of communication was an issue though, considering we only found out in the thread organising a match.

Everyone has had the same resources to organise their KOTH cup games - some have managed to play 3 or 4 games, others only 1. This forum (and the hard working admins) can only do so much (you can lead a horse to water and all that...).
Anyway, we decided to move on. The competition was getting a little stale with less activity and some fixtures (for whatever valid reason) not being played despite some valiant efforts to do so.
I remain grateful for the organisation and effort that has gone in, and it is sad that some teams dropped out and some didn't manage to get more games in. Things couldn't keep going that way and now lets all get behind the two finalists!
After 4 months it is time to get a close and crown our champions!

I understand that I obviously didn't check back here regularly enough but I think in future it would be nice for someone to at least message the teams that aren't in WDG since they are much less likely to be checking the forums every day. Also maybe set a deadline for matches and let teams know this deadline when they sign up.
As I said earlier we weren't in this competition from the beginning, we were asked to replace one of the dropped teams and we played our first match vs Team Cluck just after we were asked to participate by chaos, which was on February the 9th, just over 2 months ago, not 6 months ago as previously suggested.
I'm trying not to sound bitter about this but we (Knall and Rattan included) were really enjoying this competition and were keen to play our last 2 fixtures this week, if we had known there was a deadline for the competition then maybe we would have been more hasty in arranging our matches but I thought it was just an ongoing event which once all teams had played vs each other would result in some semi finals and a final.
Quote from: Mr Chug
Why not put the top four teams through and play it knockout from there? It's not like there's a deadline on finishing, and dropout teams aside everyone deserves a fair shot.
I don't really see why we can't do as Mr Chug has suggested? Why does there have to be a deadline for this? Just because these 2 teams have completed more fixtures before a seemingly unknown deadline shouldn't mean that they are automatically put through to a final vs each other without even considering other teams who have beaten them in the group stage.
Especially a community challenge such as this one should provide everyone with the chance to play their games. Now that we know you want to wrap it up as soon as possible then I'm sure teams will prioritise this cup over other things.
I'm obviously not the only one who feels this way as Finaldeath and discordance have stated in previous posts.
To quote from chaospwns.co.uk: "It’s a
fun
cup for WDG Regulars and clan members." Community 'fun' cups should be about that exactly; fun. People shouldn't be left feeling left out or offended.
Just my 2 pennies...

The fact that some people didn't check the forum throughout the competition has been a curse for those trying to organise it. It's proven difficult enough to get people to communicate via an
open
forum without also trying to trade e-mails and private messages on the subject.
It is possible for you to sign up (via this forum) for e-mail notifications when a thread / forum area is updated
. Click the "notify" button at the bottom of any thread and you can sign-up in this way. The same can be done for any boards (such as the "WDG KOTH CUP" board). This isn't a very hard thing to do and would have kept anyone up to date without me sending out bulk e-mails for people to ignore and ask why I'm sending them out.
I also feel that a competition that has lasted four / five months and involves a handful of teams needed bringing to a close. This isn't ETF2L, and I don't have a limitless amount of personal time to chase people and organise matches. Sorry if you are offended, but there it is. I may have over egged the 6 months but hell, the first game was early December, so I guess over 4 months is enough eh?
This is also our first attempt at a "serious" competition for our community. I didn't expect it to be perfect, and I can't force teams to communicate, arrange matches and play them. We got a fair few games sorted out.
I had originally suggested 4 teams play off, but given the disparity in the points and number of matches played in one of the leagues could have led to argument. We've therefore opted for the simplest finish possible.

I have previously apologised for not checking these forums often enough but you have to understand that from another clan leaders point of view, I don't check other clans forums as often as I do my own. I also didn't receive any of these emails you were sending out?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you are at fault because you should have organised all the matches. I'm in fact very grateful for the work that has gone into this competition from Chaos and yourself and thats why I hate to see it come to such a poor finish. I just don't think it would have been too much to ask for you just to message me on steam one day and say "hey mate, we're starting to bring the KOTH cup to a close now so could you finish off your last 2 fixtures please". ?
Quote from: Junta on April 13, 2010, 03:32:05 PM

Having a known deadline would have been enough to "force teams" to play their games. I think it was leading to be a great competition. I found the games that I played great fun against your team and chaos' team. All we needed was some warning that this could be the outcome if we didn't hurry up.
Quote from: Junta on April 13, 2010, 03:32:05 PM

I don't understand why this competition has to be done with so rapidly? From what I have heard from speaking to others, I'm not the only one who feels that the competition should go on so everyone gets a fair chance. All you are doing is discouraging people from entering your competitions in the future.

I agree it had dragged on and needed ending and organising matches was our own/our captains responsibility. The matches were fun and I enjoyed being a scout (shock, horror) and it was well organised generally and I do appreciate the time people put into this. But an important decision like introducing an end date, this is something the organisers/makers of the decision should have communicated directly to all captains, to avoid this^. Was there an announcements thread to sign up to? signing up to the whole forum area would have gotten a bit spammy. I think for better communication next time, could do one of two things, require email addresses from all captains so you have a mailing list for all captains, or create an announcements thread and require(or point out important info may be missed) all captains to sign up for notifications. I'm not fussed about what happens just hopefully this is constructive for next time.

I think all this means is next time, we need to set an overall deadline for fixtures (that everyone knows from the beginning) so that we avoid anyone being disappointed.
Top effort on the organisation front John and Jordan, must have been a nightmare.
@Cube, I can really see where you're coming from, I applauded you for your smart and to-the-point posts (something we're not used to here!
) but both the admins organising this have had a huge amount of clan stuff to deal with recently anyway, like an internal highlander, scrim team matches, server failure issues, you name it. It's a shame you guys didn't get to play all your fixtures but we can definitely vouch for our lovely admins that they have been really trying to get this moving over the past couple of months. And they do a superhuman amount of work organising the rest of us anyway.
Hopefully this blip in the usually seamless WDG machine doesn't put you off us, and we carry on seeing you on our servers.

@ Cube.
Yes, I'm sorry if my response above seemed a bit arsey, maybe it was and that's not quite fair is it. You are right on some points, but I would say that we started arranging the KOTH cup without putting the proper thought into a closing date and a maximum number of fixtures. This would have focussed people more on finishing games and getting results in (no matter what the communication method was).
I have lost the will to live in regards to some organising though, and splitting the coverage between WDGclan.co.uk and ChaosPwns.co.uk was probably not the right move either. We should have a single place for posting a full set of fixtures, rules and closing date for the competition. Consider that part a lesson learned.
I make no excuse, my failings have always been open for all to see.
