I'm also with sky and I hate them! Well, I don't hate sky.. I hate living in the sticks where the lines can only carry 3.5mbs

Don't! My folks are on such a shitty line it takes a good minute to load up the WDG homepage, fuck knows how I used to play on such a ropey connection!

Unfortunately if you live in the sticks like I do when I'm at home and you're limited to 8mbps I don't really think there's much difference. We have tiscali here which was my mum's choice based on price and price alone

It's not too bad though, and at least I dont have housemates using up all the connection speed for watching football.

At Uni I'm with Be and have been for the last 3 years. They had some problems last year because they were bought by O2 (not orange disco) and O2 started putting customers onto their equipment which overloaded their capacity. They fixed that within a month or so while I was away for the summer holidays.

Plus - if you're really worried about the speed - now they do line bundling so you can get a second phone line installed and get upto 48mbps from two lines.

Again - living in the middle of nowhere I don't know first hand what cable is like (I know the speeds are good on paper) but I've heard they're terrible in terms of customer support etc.

Got sky TV - but again can't get sky broadband (the free sky broadband...i can get the expensive one where you get less) where I live.

If you're living with others I'll add my voice to the Be recommendations- it's really just O2 for people who know what they're doing, but the price for the decent packages is much nicer when shared between 3 or 4. It's worth noting that if you're on O2 or Orange for your mobile their internet packages tend to be heavily discounted, but you've then got to put up with O2 or Orange running your internet.

When I was ringing up to upgrade I asked if the top package would reduce my ping. The fella said it wouldn't but he could make some changes on the line. Dropped it from 50 to 25.

Might just have been a random good tech support guy, but it's worth an ask, if sky can do it I don't see why other companies can't.

Pretty much...what they are doing is a trade-off.

It's to do with something on the line that can vary from around 3-12.

When you first get a new provider that's why they say it takes a few days for you to get the best speed out of your line - it starts at the highest setting and works it's way down until it gets to a stable value.

The higher(lower) the value the better speed you get, but the lower the reliability of your connection.

I don't think it has much to do with pings though - I think that ones called fastpath which basically decreases latency at the cost of lower error correction ability by sending less error correcting information with the packets.

I'm on cable, Virgin 10Mb/s. Brilliant service here in Sheffield - I get the full 10Mb/s any time of day, stable connection and 15ms pings to bbc.co.uk

They go all the way up to 50Mb/s (and are trialling 200Mb/s now)  but personally I find 10Mb/s is sufficient 99% of the time. I do all my big downloads overnight as it is.

The daytime download limit system isn't bad, much better than having a hard cap and worth it to keep good latency on the network during the day.

latency = ping if you throw a *2 in there
I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but if I remember correctly without fastpath the spread out the packets a bit, so that a burst error hits several of them a little (thus increasing the chance that it can be corrected) instead of completely destroying an entire packet. Some providers charge for fastpath, so watch out when you order that!

lower ping = better. Means that where you think the guy your shooting at is and where the server thinks he is are closer together.

if you have low ping so lots of packets missing one shouldn't do anything, if you miss a lot or you somehow get malformed data (shouldn't happen really) then youll start seeing warping?
