Sooooo...who's reading what? got anything interesting for Christmas?

Starting off, I'm currently reading The Dice Man, which I'm not going to recommend until I've read it through, since the lead is quite honestly a pretty big dick in it, it's the best way to describe him, heh. He goes and starts using dice with things marked out on how it rolls and it just goes from there - interesting concept, and it's quite interesting and funny in places, just man, a protagonist you'd not like to readily meet, heh.

I finished another Iain M. Banks (ie; sci-fi) novel I got for Christmas - Consider Phlebas - the first Culture novel he wrote. It's somewhat of a rough read, but still is good (and interesting) with a real dead-set anti-hero, although I'd recommend The Player of Games for those who've not read a Iain M. Banks novel before - I found, as a player of games (heh), it was a much more interesting first Culture-based book to read, even if it skirts less around ethics, morality and so forth which his books do rather well.

Did that at Christmas, kind of "meh".

At the moment I'm on "The girl that kicked a hornets nest" or something, the third one of Steig Larssons Millenium trilogy. It's good, I'd recommend all three.

I'm also about halfway through "Paradise Lost" and "The Iliad" but have been for about a year; and I'm very nearly done with "Crime and Punishment". Next on the list are both Mass Effect books, then either "Beyond good and evil" or "Thus spake (or spoke) Zarathustra" and then maybe some more of the middle of the Discworld series and Moby Dick. I've also got book called "The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test" which I don't really understand and another one about an Irishman that lost his bike called "The Third Policeman" which I had to give up on as I got 2/3rds of the way through and didn't have a fucking clue what was happening or who anyone was...

I could go on but won't...

Currently reading the Endymion Omnibus (Endymion + The Rise of Endymion) by Dan Simmons. It's set ~250 years after the Hyperion Omnibus (Hyperion + The Fall of Hyperion), all epic sci-fi novels. I would recommend anything by Dan Simmons, especially Ilium and Olypmos.

Currently re-reading George R R Martins 'Song of Ice and Fire' series in preparation for the next book in a few months. Highly recommended, its easily the best Fantasy series i've read (and i've read a lot)

Somewhat interestingly I'm doing it on my Sony Ebook reader, paper is soooo last century.  No more labourious page turning for me, just press a button.
Means you can read a book with one hand too, for all you erotica fans.

It also saves me from carting my library back and forth to Sheffield, I spent last Uni semester re-reading the complete Wheel of Time series (instead of going to lectures), and those suckers are bulky.

At some point I need to get back to Alistair Reynolds 'Revelation Space' series, good stuff but I left it after 3 books to start on WoT.

Recently finished 'The Afghan Campaign' by Steven Pressfield. It's a historical fiction novel about Alexander the Great, told from the perspective of a Macedonian foot solider. Excellent book, would recommend it to anyone, even those who don't like historical fiction.

Also, although it's not really a book, I just finished the 'V for Vendetta' graphic novel by Alan Moore. Great story, although I prefer the movie in some places (same with Watchmen).

I'm currently reading 'The Demon-Haunted World' by Carl Sagan, which I think should be required reading for everyone.

Sounds pretty cool. A similar series is The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell (of Sharpe fame), it's historical fiction set in the 9th century about Alfred the Great, told by a Saxon who was raised by Vikings. Therefore lots of fighting, pillaging and drinking.

An excerpt from the first book in the series

I'm currently reading Terry Prattchets "Unseen Academicals". A bit of a slow start, but I'm currently enjoying it.
After reading lots of the Discworld series out of sequence, I've finally started at the first book "The Colour of Magic" Smiley

I'm also about halfway through "Paradise Lost" and "The Iliad" but have been for about a year;
I've read The Iliad, hard going but "Paradise Lost" was waaaay more heavy! Couldn't finish. The Odyssey was better than The Iliad.

I've always wanted to read "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".. by John Le Carré

I could write again that you have to read the books of the Twilight movies.. but I wont.

Instead you have to read the books of Sergej Lukianenko. I just finished "The draft" and after that the second book "Chistovik (The Final Draft)". He has some more great books: " Nochnoi Dozor" and the 3 other books of the series and.. ah look them up yourself.

The other books I like won't be you're taste so I'll save myself the trouble. And I read ~ 1-3 books in 2 weeks so it would be a long list..
