I don't get it. A pound is nearly exactly a euro, yet games cost in pounds about half as much as in euro.
That's not only the case for steam, but also for amazon and normal stores.
What gives? Huh?

try moving to Australia, they have it hard

its less to do with conversion rates and economies and more to do with what they think the average person would pay. also if one shop ups the prices and they still sell then the others follow suit

I think it probably has something to do with internet competition from companies in the Jersey tax haven (Amazon, play.com) undercutting the high street retailers. Now taxes are fixed to take care of the loophole, but it's too late and we are used to paying less than £25 for a PC game on release, so they can't raise it without outcry.

High street retailers still sell at around 50 euros for a new game.

Just as comparison, bad company 2:
If I order from amazon.at, I pay 43,90€ (or can buy the imported uk-version for 64,90€. HA! Gentlemen, your are scoundrels!)
If I order from game.co.uk, I pay 24,99 pounds (or 34,99 for the download version, wtf?) plus 2,95 for shipping, for a total of 32,12€
That's 25% off, and amazon's price is already relatively cheap, in a shop I probably'd have to pay 49,99€, maybe 44,99€.

FYI: I order a lot of Blu-Rays and DVDs from Amazon UK and it works without a hitch (and quite fast, I might add).

Not quite, the 'loophole' hasn't been closed but the Low Value Consignment Relief [!] only applies to goods less than £18 in value.
