It's Steampunk. Steampunk is Victorian/Edwardian. Wrong era for TF2 (as if that counted for anything now!)

And I may be overlooking a serious weakness but they seem a might overpowered. As people have already said, they don't require ammo. Dealing reduced damage to buildings doesn't seem much of a downside.

Even the flamethrower requires ammo and has the weakness of only being short-range.

Edit: at a push the updates could be something out of Flash Gordon..but still WRONG! TF2 is not Sci-fi, grumble

Hats, fair enough - but the weapons/maps have all been in a fairly similar style/theme/time period - I was about to say there isn't anything by the way of sci-fi/futuristic (meh - there's space rockets - but they're not really futuristic/sci-fi) stuff - but then I remembered stupid maps like nucleus with that retarded giant floating orb thing - but I think we can call that an outlier/exception as that's the only one - and even that still has the large tape machine computers etc. so it isn't in a futuristic setting. Apart from that - most of the maps are set in a similar sort of period.

From a paper by valve:

In Team Fortress 2, we chose to employ an art style inspired by the early to mid 20th century commercial illustrators J. C. Leyendecker, Dean Cornwell and Norman Rockwell

Lasers (except the wrangler which is a bog standard laser pointer) and ray guns as weapons don't fit in with any of the art styles of the maps, weapons, projectiles (these especially as all of the weapons are bullets, projectiles or flames) etc.
