W3rd up.
Pleasantries out of the way, I was chatting with Brahms about training maps the other day and thought I'd whack up a quick post about them. Similar to the epic video thread its basically so the stuff doesn't get lost in the black hole that is the shoutbox. If you're not sure and can't decipher the clue in the name, training maps will help you inprove (usually) a small area of your game and can actually be quite fun. I'll start by posting some of the maps I use and then you guys can follow suit. I don't spend ages on these things, just a few mins here and there when no-ones on the server (or I'm at work and bored). If you didn't know, you're going to have to create your own server to play these on as very few servers run training maps as it would be retarded!
First up,
tr_airshot_v0
. You stand at the bottom (or on any of the balconies), get bots fired at you from a big ol' bot-cannon and shoot them out of the sky. Pretty much solely for solly/demo/sniper.
Next is
tr_flinger_b2
. Pretty much the same as airshot except set on either the C point of Gravelpit or the spire on Badlands. Again only really solly/demo/sniper friendly.
(A quick aside about these 2, I found out that you can farm achievements on these if you type "sv_cheats 0" then "retry" in the console. You'll get disconnected and then automatically get reconnected; once you reconnect you'll be able to farm to your hearts content. Usually you can't get achievements on servers with bots in them as you need to have cheats enabled, but this is a work around/bug that lets you turn off cheats but keep the bots. I haven't used this, but I know some people might find it useful to get the stupid grind-tacular achievements. This will also fuck up your kill stats if you don't regularly explode/kill yourself so be warned.)
Best in class
is just a bunch of basic runs for all the classes which is pretty fun and there's a hell of a lot of easter eggs built into the map too. I'll leave it down to you to find them all.
Finally,
tr_aim
. This is basically bots running around like headless chickens. Various settings for them/you changes the speed/class of the bots. Can be good for most classes but scout/sniper especially to get the twitch reflex on the go.
I hear jump maps are good for solly/demo but don't actually know of any good ones. There are a couple of good scout ones I've found but the jumps have no real use in gameplay so I won't chuck them up here unless anyone asks for them.
Also, for all you podcasters out there, it might be worth checking out the Friendly Fire podcast as they've recently done a whole hour long show on Training. They tend to focus a bit much on pug-ing/6v6 but some of the stuff they talk about is actually pretty handy. One of the main presenters is a pretty hardcore Christian and they don't swear on the show, but its still worth listening to (it's better then CP IMO as these guys actually PLAY THE FUCKING GAME! I have issues with CP but that's a different rant for a different thread).

Regarding the Soldier:
Jump maps, imo are a waste of time until you've learnt air strafing and flick rj.
Firstly, do tr_rocketshooting2 or whatever the one is with bots just jumping up and down. This is the best start to training soldier because it's so easy to airshot if you send the bot straight up. Therefore you can get used to the rocket speed and stuff like that.
Next, ctf_bball2. The problem with this map is you know where the enemies rj's are going to land, so it makes it quite easy to airshot like a bitch in the game. Therefore you have to learn airstrafing to cap the intel on this map and it trains everything you need to play Soldier. (Jumps, Airshot, Airstrafe and ground rocket accuracy)
After you're an adept, (ie. you can airshot on tr_rocketshooting comfortably), try tr_airshot_v0. Yeah, big difference, but you've been playing bball dawg you should be OK with it. This map is the best imo for training airshots, but only if you simulate a real game (ie. don't stand stock still when trying to airshot, pretend you're dodging as well).
Lastly, do the following jump maps they are ranked in order of difficulty.
rj_rckteer - My recommendation as it can be done comfortably after some training.
rj_rocketeer_adv
jump_pagoda - Makes me rage. RAGE.
That's my training regime.
EDIT: READ THIS
In the console type 'cl_interp 0'. It sets the delay for your rockets! Try it with any number above 1 and you will be like wtf. I use 0 but I guess you could use some delay if you wish. However, I found this command to be VERY useful and have noticed my rocket skills improving.

Basin.. go to your config folder, open the config.cfg file and find that command..
Delete it, then put it in the soldier.cfg file.. save and close.. done
You run the risk of borking every other class as this IS NOT a specific command for rockets!

Too late my good man. I've had cl_interp 0 for a few months now. Everything seems Okay. However it was a greivous error in judgement on my part and yes, your method is much better. Also I know it's not a specific command for rockets, but so far there haven't been any complications with any of the classes (Soldier included).
I don't know much about codes, configs and the source engine so I shall remember not to be a retard with console commands in the future!

That command is actually a network tweak..
each person will need a different setting..
What you need to do is in the console enable the net graph.. then look at the "lerp" setting..
If its grey, great take it down a little.. keep doing that till it goes yellow!
When it's yellow its causing a negative effect on your connection
so go back up a little untill its grey and stays that way!
For most people its around 0.2
But for some its higher/lower
and @cruel, you would have to set it for each class with my method
