Meow?

« on: March 17, 2009, 08:45:06 PM »

Right, had this problem for ages, and it's really starting to fuck me off now.

Basically after a certain amount of time of my comp being turned on, all web browsers stop working (FF & IE), and basically keep coming up with a "page could not be found" type error. It doesn't search for a page then time out or anything. Literally, click refresh, split second that error message is there. I know I'm still connected to the internet, and other internet based applications still run fine, just not the web browsers. Usually starts to happen after a day or so of leaving it on (is pretty much random). Only way to fix it I've found so far is restart the comp.

Believe it started a very short period after I first got my PC (I'm running Vista btw)

If you google this kinda thing, there's loads of forums of people saying they have this problem too, but I've yet to see a definitive answer, no one really seems to know.

I think one person may have said re-installing Vista would work, but I'd rather not do that at all tbh, especially if it doesn't work, or the problem comes back.

So thought I'd see if any of the tech wizards have any idea, cos this is starting to drive me up the fucking wall.

Cheers Smiley

There might be some more information in the event log. Type eventvwr in a command prompt window to bring up the system event log and have a fish around in there for a start.

Could be a DNS issue maybe as it's across different browsers?

Have you tried restarting your router, or disconnecting/reconnecting to it? (Or use the "repair connection" option if you right click on the connection) If this works, try setting your DNS servers manually to something like OpenDNS (google it)

My vista recently messed itself up, breaking the ability to use "http://localhost/" and instead I had to use 127.0.0.1 which has something to do with the HOSTS file (in system32/drivers/)

Urg, Vista. I've had times when IE has stopped operating. Can be a tussle sorting out core problems more so then XP Smiley

Try Portable Opera or Firefox, to check that it isn't something hijacking it at some point. Sounds like malware or viruses. Do some ultra scans - MalwareBytes, Ad-aware, Spybot, Super Anti-spyware, AVG and others. You can never be too sure.

BTW: Even if MSN and stuff looks like it stays connected, the persistent connections might still be interrupted but just not cancelled - they just keep retrying for a while before they drop, so intermittent connections really need you checking the source of the problem, it might just be your ISP or router.

Omg I am so glad you posted this, I have the exact same problem.
Im running vista, I used to have opera and gave up on it because of this, now run firefox and have same problem.
I had to restart my computer 2 mins ago because of it, it seems to happen more when I am looking at photos on facebook so maybe to do with loading graphics too much? (I have no idea what im talking about btw)

Check the event log (as per nineblade's suggestion - can be cryptic but useful)
Are you connecting via wireless or cable?
Any software changes recently?

You say that other web applications work OK? Other web apps can use different protocols though.

When the issue happens, go to command prompt and type IPCONFIG/ALL - just so I can see what is reported there

You call also use the PING or TRACERT command (in conjunction with a web address such as TRACERT www.wdgclan.co.uk) - post results here too.

and finally...

I actually like Vista Smiley

Not perfect, but I find that it works

If you've ever had to fix a damn vista machine you'll know they are not at all easy to fix. The MS Knowledgebase is rubbish, the tools included suck, there are little to no command line tools and Vista Premium misses all the corporate tools (tough luck if you have to go registry hacking). If Vista even has one system file corrupted it can mean you have to reinstall it sometimes - especially if it's a critical component like Windows Update. Doing a month of student laptop repairs, and the amount of times Vista needed reinstallation was really eye opening (and not all of them were virus related, Vista sometimes just corrupted itself!), and also a lot of time wasted. I hate having my time wasted Sad

You might be able to maintain it with no viruses and no problems since you know how it works, but honestly, it just doesn't happen generally. And sometimes it breaks for no reason too! Sad I'm just bemused at how the system can do things to itself that makes it break.

In any case, this is related to the discussion because it would be much easier to diagnose in XP - the Vista network stack has sometimes real issues - especially if it's WiFi (forgetting things or just doing some strange "Local connection only" stuff).

Rant over I hope, Vista is just a pain to fix. It might be the greatest windows to use for all I care, but that's not the issue at hand!

Sorry, but as an IT professional I don't really find fixing XP any less difficult than fixing Vista in most common issues! lol

I will admit that XP has more material on it as its been around longer.

Vista is no more of a pain than XP IMO...
the problem is that everything is tied to and monitored by something else!

I actually find I get problems resolved quicker with Vista than I did with XP
This wasnt the case before SP1..but it is now!

you know XP better because you been using it longer!
If you use something all the time.. your bound to know it better right?

Hm... As an IT (semi)professional I had a FRIGGIN DAMN HARD TIME finding the Wireless Network Options (y'know the one dialog with the authentication tab, the only point where you can setup 802.11x for a wireless connection), which was obvious under XP (it was in the wireless connection properties, in the "Advanced" section of the network selection), but hidden behind 3 more layers of Explorer/Control Panel windows (Network and sharing center -> (link pane) Manage wireless networks -> network preferences) that the "normal user" was obviously never intended to see...

Oh well (ends rant mode)...

I suppose Vista does OK on mundane tasks, is equally hard to fix when properly broken (say, corrupt registry), but sometimes the UI design is non-obvious in a very annoying sort of way (e.g. above, it breaks hierarchy). OTOH, I sometimes facepalm at not being able to find something in OSX, because it was too obvious (i.e. Drag&Drop would have sufficed)...

Then how would you run TF2? Smiley

(waiting for someone to point out WINE Smiley ).

And a lot of the obscure and irrecoverable errors in Vista it seems, dozens of different ones. A shame a lot of them can't be recovered from ("sfc" is about it for fixing system files, and if that doesn't work you're just buggered Sad ).
