This is a bit of a self-indulgent moan, but I'm curious if other soldiers feel the same way.
Heavies got natasha. Good snipers and engies rack up the points. Pyros - well it isn't quite the 'w+m1' that it's characterised as, but it is rewarding to play. But every unlock seems to make soldier (and probably demo) a little less fun.
I've always liked soldier, it's pretty much my primary class, and I don't think I'm that bad. But wow, it's getting tough to get anywhere. We don't get uber, and if we do we're useless with it and everyone is angry. Kritzubers are great but you hardly get them on public servers. Medics mostly ignore you because they're glued to the nearest heavy, and a natasha wielding heavy is not so easy to kill. I hate that feeling when you rocket jumped to the front line, the medic ignores you, and you have to trudge back for health with your head down.
I know, we've got our own unlocks coming eventually, and I am being slightly tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing. But genuinely, over the past week I've found myself feeling a bit frustrated with soldier. I look at the score board and think 'hmm, i might as well go engie' or something. I don't do too badly, but maybe I'll be joining all you scouts next week

I like playing soldier, but I find I can only play it in the right place, and by place I mean specific stages of specific maps (e.g. Dustbowl stage 2). I'd like to see an unlock specifically designed to fight heavies- at the moment we've got an advantage when played well over just about everything else except the massive HP and close range fight of them.

I play a lot of soldier, because i like it and because i'm pretty good at it. I do quite often play other classes, but that's just for a bit of variation, there's only so much time i can spend as one class.
The only thing that usually stops me having fun when i play solly is if i'm doing particularly badly and dying a lot. Otherwise it's pretty much always fun.
I would agree that some of the recent updates have made soldier and demo slightly harder to play in some circumstances, but then it's not really a huge change and i actually think it's a bit better balanced now. Plus we just got an extra 4 rockets to use.

Soldier is my favourite class too.
But I think he has some disadvantages at the moment (like claws said: airblast ect.)
When there will be the Soldier update.... in year 2010.. we will see if they can bring some good extras for him.
Maybe morphine for himself that he doesn't need medics anymore
Atm it's not a big problem for me to play soldier if you have medics which are healing you if you yell for help.

Demoman is tougher for me because I like stickies. Still, now I know the 5 second rule, it's pretty neat (good for ubercharges).
Soldier is still fun, I like rocketjumping
but need to practice more at it since I'm getting worse

I used to play soldier a lot before the spy gene kicked in... and I turned into a monster.
I found the biggest fun-sucking update to by pyro, when they got the blowback on the flamethrower. First pub I joined, saw an oncoming pyro thinking "I am a soldier, I just juggle these guys and they die" fired a rocket, he reflects it straight back at me (I hadnt really read the release notes so it was a bit of a surprise).
Pyro is the most extreme example, but each time a class gets updated, it seems to make it harder for solly to kill it (eg the recent Natascha buff... ugh for soldiers) and with the scout update next week, they are going to be able to perform similar to a rocket jump with the Force-A-Nature gun, making them even harder to hit with rockets. Also there will be a lot of getting stunned by sandman for soldier as he is a bit slow.
I think it's a class to avoid til it gets buffed/unlockables. Or at least til all the scouts disappear.

the shotgun, it's a killer and it'll keep on being that untill they give the spy that bullet reverting shield he has been beggin for.
Also, nothing will ever remove the soldier from my favourites list, he has fucking critical rockets!

Know what you are saying claws, cus I too consider soldier to be my primary class. I still have no problem with pyros as firing rate of RL is much faster than airblast so you can always get them. Natasha is a bastard, I think, especially with the smaller cone of fire heavies now have. But soldier is still my favourite class, except maybe playing spy against idiots because its too much fun backstabbing a massive group of people with nobody turning round
(never happens on our server anymore grr)
Also rockets still have the biggest percentage of kills on our server by a good distance.

It is that, it's a shame that i tend not to use it anymore. That's mostly because i have weapon 1 and melee assigned to M4 and M5 so they're much easier to find. Shovel ftw.

Claws - completely agree. Think soldier is one of the most effective classes when played but has seen lots of direct challenges with the new unlocks to the other classses. I also agree that soldiers NEVER get uber (but they are very effective with a Kritz). Two soldiers together can mincemeat an SG at range and its hard work killing two at once (my arch Nemesis is Ringel.. who generally finishes me off when he plays soldier
)
Any heavy who's had a crit rocket to the face knows that soldiers are awesome and I'd hate to see them played less as a result of Valve not thinking through its changes properly. COME ON VALVE! I JUST WANT THE BALANCE BACK!

From soldier point of view, I'd like to agree. Soldier somehow feels not right sometimes. You do lots of damage but unless you surprise a single player you never seem to be able to finish them (at least that's for me), especially if they have a medic (crits excluded). Maybe I'm just not good at it
As a medic I have two things to say:
a) I always try to heal everybody in acceptable vicinity, from scout to sniper. If I don't heal you although I'm near you, hit your 'medic'-button in case I missed you.
b) Yes soldiers don't get ubers, but for a reason: They suck with (normal) ubers! They can't kill a sentry with it and they certainly can't kill a group of enemies!

18.5% of all damage is dealt with rockets (that's first place! Second with 15 is flamethrower)
The soldier is on fourth place in Avg kills/hour, Avg assits/hour and times played.
However he is seventh on avg points/hour.
