The programming Thread

Hey everyone,
sice there seems so much general geekery around, and I can't remember having that discussion before (feel free to correct me), here goes:
What do you code? What language do you use for it, and why?
Or, what would you like to know how to do better? Tool recommendations?
Lemme start:
I mostly do scripting in a Unix environment, for the job. I tend to use perl, because of its flexibility, and because I usually need to parse files, which perl is miraulously good at. I don't need to wrap my mind around how the language would like to have something done, the language wraps around my twisted mind.
Other than that, bash scripting, when I don't need to edit and/or parse files.
I did a bunch of OO stuff, starting my programming career with ObjectPascal (still like it, though it usually suffers from the bad library design), over to C++, and Java. Had a look at C# when it first came out, that was before I really knew my ways through OO, therefore didn't like it so much. When I need to do GUI stuff, I mostly use Java, since I can construct a halfway decent GUI from just code without resorting to a GUI design tool.
Over to you.

Programming is
evil
.
I only know Python, I had to learn it last term for my Physics course, never done any programming before this. So, programming physical simulations and such like. It's all very dull.

lol, r007.
You make it sound as if programming was as common as watching TV.
I created a number of database based on MS Access for myself (to keep track of my movies, music, comics etc) with a lot of code. I'm actually quite proud of that.
Still, it's at best advanced novice level as far as Access is concerned and child's play compared to what you do.

I started out using Perl on HP-UX (PerlTk turned out to be the best thing I ever learned!).
After a bit of C++ and Java I ended up mainly using VB.NET or C#.NET because the stuff I was trying to improve on/upgrade was typically MS Excel VBA or MS Access.
Nowadays I only use VB.Net or Perl Tk for win32 apps or ASP.Net for web apps

lol I only really do html/xml... but i know a bit of a lot... meaning i know a bit of php/mySQL, C++.. but not much.. couldnt make anything worth the time so I dont bother... I enjoy coding websites... not really the process... more the satisfaction at the end.. especially since as I said before I do it for a good cause
There are soo many websites that aren't propperly coded for screen readers (dreamweaver is a major reason for this) and it annoys me a lot...
It doesnt take much more time to learn to code xhtml.. its not hard (its actually quite easy... I could teach you in a couple of weeks intensive training) Photoshop and Illustrator on the other hand can take a lot more time..

I started with Basic on a *really* old DOS laptop I had, but never really did anything special with it.
When I was about 14, I taught myself PHP and I would say that's my strongest programming language. I've even been paid to do bits and pieces (an online caravan shop and
http://www.rochestercapital.com/
) I also did this formula 1 website for someone for my A-level computing project (nice to get paid to do coursework
) which had like image tagging, rss news feeds, functioning race calendar.
Done a bit of Pascal (AS computing) where we had to sort out Terry's Turkeys. Had a very limited go at assembly language. We also use MATLAB which has it's own language but essentially it's a maths/engineering/systems software
Now I'm at uni we use C for pretty much everything as it's all embedded computers.
I'd quite like to learn java though!

Dabbled a bit, - done some Assembler (built and programmed an electronic door lock without looking up the code) ... god thats a horrible language. Done some C++ (made a pacman clone), Matlab (can't remember any of this now though
), Java (did a orbits simulation with accurate gravity), PHP (built a wiki from scratch), SQL, Perl, Shell scripts. Oh, and i've done some Qbasic when i was young.
Not really more than a novice in any of them though, Thanks to changing courses 3 times at uni (Systems engineering -> Software engineering -> Computer Networking)
After a year in software engineering I discovered i really don't want to be a full time programmer. Much happier doing occasional small projects or scripts.

I've done Java and C and a tiny bit of Assembler (and if it is "programming", PHP and Perl) in my computer science course (and a few odd languages out of it), and am learning C++ out of it to further my knowledge I guess. Eventually I'll aim to get a job in the videogame industry.

Well, not quite as common, but considering what TV is offering these days....
OTOH, most gamers have a general affinity for computers, so coding is not tooo remote.

Ireally don't want to be a full time programmer. Much happier doing occasional small projects or scripts.
Same here. Despite studying Computer Science, I'm always relieved not having to code too much. Like Chaos, it's more for the satisfaction at the end, or to make my life easier. Nothing quite so satisfying as a tedious task scripted away.
On the web front, I also wrote the occasional PHP (mostly fiddling with my web site's CMS
SPIP
-- which is really good, despite being french), had to do a project for Uni, and even tried a larger web app once (still unfinishedly collecting dust in its SVN repository)... I always seem to reach a point where I get brain cramps from the untypedness. I design something (I really like proper Software design), and then implementing it gets to be so tedious because I cannot really know what I'll find in a variable. Oh well.
Oh and Hex, don't worry, I forgot to put up the signs saying "Only nerdish spoken in this thread!"
